293561 2004-11-18 10:31:00 It's very hard to prove that - people can hide them in word documents labelled "project.doc"... Growly (6)
293562 2004-11-18 10:58:00 That's what I do at school. That is with MP3's and games etc. Wouldn't have any porn.

Students are all-powerful when it comes to computers, you can never get fully ahead of every trick they try. But do what you can. Good luck.

I think refining the search to the student folders or equivilent will solve your problem.

293564 2004-11-18 19:27:00 I think the only way is first to look for dodgy filenames, and once you find them to look in further detail into those students' home drives (using thumbnails).

An option would be to use some software to generate thumbnail sheets (ie. Vallen JPEGger), and view those. It basically makes contact sheets with thumbnails of pictures on them.

293565 2004-11-18 20:52:00 You need a bit of grunt when processing lots of graphics files, even generating thumbnails can slow things to a crawl, especially if you've got some large files on there.

Possibly booting a live Linux distro will handle things a bit better than XP, for the search anyway.

293566 2004-11-18 21:40:00 I know there are websites online... I'll try and find the name of one.

Basically it inspects the header of each file to see if it is an image (Just like Linux does - The _Right_ way of doing it!) and ignores the file extension.

It scans local/network drives, as well as reads text documents and inspects them for obscene materials (It picked up a ton of my "Lyrics" documents for songs etc that I had.... Outkast - Ms Jackson.txt looked really dodgy when somebody ran it on my familys PC) as well as profane works and a myriad of other things!

Totally anonymous, nothing gets reported back across the net.........

Now to just find that site.....

293567 2004-11-19 06:59:00 yes..any thing like that would be good..
i did some smaller scans today and all seems fine but we need to show prudence so some sort od procedure would be great.

293568 2004-11-19 07:10:00 Ah yes, I love using the 'net send' command to send little pop up boxes to other people (muahahaha). I just rename the .bat a .cfg and they ignore it.

Ah, yes, I also developed (well, not really, I just workded out how to do it with nbtstat) how to track those messages and find out what their username is.
