2004-11-18 07:19:00 | Hi, I've got a silly question to ask. I'm sitting my full driving test tomorrow. I've left it for so many years as I've never really needed it, but now it's time to get it because I want to apply for some holiday jobs that require it. Anyway can you sit this test in a manual or automatic? And if you sit it in an automatic, does that mean you will be restricted to driving an automatic on your full licence?? I can always ask tomorrow at the AA, but it's better to get the car sorted out before hand. One of our cars is a manual and it's smaller and more maneuverable, and I can drive it quite well. The other car is a new Honda Accord but it's automatic and quite big, so parking in tight spaces in town could be a problem. Driving it is much easier and you don't have to concentrate on gear changes and you can concentrate on other stuff. E.g. do they stop you and then ask questions about what hazards there were or something? Any other tips for the full driving test? Thanks :)

2004-11-18 07:53:00 | I second the advice that you can sit in an auto, and drive a manual once you have your full. I find this quite a dangerous concept, but oh well - it's the law. | somebody (208) | |
2004-11-18 08:05:00 | As far as I'm aware.. if you pass your test driving a manual you can drive both auto and manual, but if you do your test with an auto transmission, you can get fined for driving a manual vehicle. I think it's classed as a restriction on the LTSA and Police records... don't quote me on that. Has something to do with the fact that there are obvious differences between the 2 types of transmission, specifically clutch control which is obviously non-existant in an auto transmission vehicle. There are safety issues related to driving a manual transmission vehicle... things like speed when cornering and appropriate gear selection, these are less of an issue in an auto transmission vehicle as the car's engine will adjust itself accordingly. If you can... I'd go with a manual vehicle, also if you planning to drive trucks etc then manual is the way to go 'cause most trucks are manual (even the smaller ones) apart from the fact that you will require a HT (heavy truck license) depeding on the type of truck you will drive.. if you're driving a truck that is. cheers chiefnz

2004-11-18 09:17:00 | Can I do the test in an automatic vehicle? Yes. If you pass the test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission your licence will have an automatic only' condition placed on it. This means that you will only be able to drive an automatic vehicle unless you have a supervisor with you, or you sit and pass the test again in a manual vehicle. The foregoing is from LTSA FAct Sheet 57 and relates to license testing for older (over 80 yrs) drivers. Seeing as how they make a special note of it for older drivers I doubt that it applies to anyone else.

Once you've passed the full test in either a manual or automatic you can drive whatever the hell you want. Though thats already been done to death here. Dress tidily, take a clean car, remove all the McD's rubbish and coke cans and stuff, don't leave any loose CD's lying around etc. Half the test I'm sure is coming across as clean cut, confident and responsible. Watch the start of the test area for traps - Porirua is a great one for having a STOP sign as you come out of the parking lot - apparently stacks of people fail for blowing through it like a give way. |

2004-11-18 09:28:00 | Yep I thought the same. If you pass the test in an auto then your license is endorsed for auto only but a pass in a manual means no endorsements. That is how it used to be. Don't know if that has been changed or not. | Peter M (852) | |
