293330 2004-11-17 22:05:00 Gidday!
I'm shopping for ram.
My pc takes DDR pc2100
I want 2x 512mb to replace the 2x 256mb i have now.
The question is...
Am i looking for the fastes mhz, or what is it I look for when shopping? I know I can get higher than pc2100 and that it will just run at pc2100, so will that directly reduce the mhz to a certain amount? LOL ...don't really know what im talking about!
Cheers! :d

293331 2004-11-17 22:17:00 What motherboard/CPU do you have? If PC2100/DDR266 is the fastest your mobo support there nothing you can do about it. Why do you wish to replace the 2x256 DIMMS? Why not just get another 512 DIMM? Most motherboards have support for atleast 3 sticks of RAM, and seeing as no chipset that support dual channel tops out at PC2100 theres no need to have matching DIMMS.

Running PC3200/DDR400 @ PC2100/DDR266 will be the same as running DDR266, but it will also allow you to tighten the timings for a small performance increase.

That doesnt really make alot of sense, any chance you could try explaining it again?

293332 2004-11-17 22:38:00 Thanks Pete,
I have a Micro star international (ms-6577) mobo with only 2 slots for ram, hence the idea of removing both. Can I leave one 256 in and get just 1x 512mb to go with it?
(forget the last confusing sentence in my original post! :-) )
My current memory says 133mhz. Is that times 2 slots to become the DDR266 you mention? Is a pc2100 always pc2100/ddr266 or is the ddr266 sometimes a different #?

PC specs
P4 2.4ghz
512 ram
xp home

Thankyou!

293333 2004-11-17 23:25:00 Have a quick read of this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) thread, i waffle on about CPU's and memory and it should help make some of the terms make more sense.

Yes there would be no reason why you cant use 1x256 and 1x512, that should work fine. Just did a quick google for your motherboard, it can only support up to 1gb of RAM, so taking that into consideration it might be an idea just to bite the bullet and go for 2x512mb. Either way it doesnt really matter what you choose.
