| 293344 | 2004-11-17 21:22:00 | In Win 98se in ScanDisk under the advanced tab on this comp the "lost file fragments" box has two options, one for "free' and one for "convert to files'. AFAIK these are all 'orphaned ' files, bits left over, unassociated, and best to get rid of them OK? On this comp the 'convert to files' is checked is ticked which I guess is the default coz I doubt the user has ever changed this setting if even been anywhere near it. So.......would changing the setting to 'free' delete these fragments and free up a bit (not much) HDD space? Can't find anything about it in help. Thanks very much if someone could clarify this. :) |

| 293345 | 2004-11-18 00:24:00 | scandisk can have the lost file fragments to be converted to files in case the user has documents or data that needs to be recovered after a system crash. if the user has no data that needs recovering then the lost file fragments setting can be changed to free. | viper (6375) | ||
| 293346 | 2004-11-18 01:45:00 | The "recovered" fragments are called "FILExxx.CHK" (the xxx being sequence numbers), and in W98 are almost certainly in the root directory "C:\". I have noticed that in W2000 a new directory (I seem to remember "RECOVER.000", but I've only seen it once ... ;-)) is created to hold them. You can look at the files using Notepad (or Wordpad if huge). Mostly they are "useless". |
