| 293095 | 2004-11-17 04:01:00 | Greetings all, Well Im doing my fair share of thread-starting these past two <-> three days eh!? Ive got myself a Compaq PC with a Windows 98 SE Liscence sticker on the back of it. Nowhere does it say OEM. Basically I wanna use the liscence on another PC Ive got here that is currently running Linux, and instead run Linux on the PC that has the Liscence sticker on the back (Coz its faster ;-)). So - Because there's no mention of OEM or Compaq on the liscence, can I simply just keep the two PC's (Neither will be sold) and install Win98SE on the second, slower one once Ive formatted the HDD of the Compaq with Linux? |

Except that the Microsoft robots have already found this thread and are activating their robolawyers. ;-) Just be careful if you're formatting the Compaq disk. They often have a type 12 (hex) partition which holds the BIOS setup programme. (You can download the ROMPaq and restore it if you have an accident). Some Deskpros gave difficulty with LILO becasue of this partition. One of my boxes boots to DOS, then uses the DOS linux loader. There's a way round it, but I never bothered. |
