293694 2004-11-18 23:50:00 I am on dial up with Xtra, telecom is offering to upgrade to jetstream for free, this includes a modem and connection etc.....in my case I need to have it hard wired at my comps site, the fee for that has been somewhat reduced.

Should I upgrade ? or not ?
is it worth it ?
is jetstream all its cracked up to be ?

peoples thoughts would be appreciated.

gary :D

293695 2004-11-18 23:52:00 If your line is capable of receiving it, then yes, definitely.

Since I upgraded about 4 months ago, I can't stand going back to dialup. It's much faster - pages load faster, downloads are faster - and the main benefit is that you can use the phone at the same time.

Although your monthly costs will be higher than with dialup, I think it's well worth it.

293697 2004-11-19 00:22:00 I would say do it, even if it is Telecom. If you live in welly you should change to telstra clear and go cable.

It wouldn't be much of a hasle because you are already with xtra

293700 2004-11-19 01:18:00 A quick calculation should reveal the correct course to take . Unlimited dialup is somewhere around the $25 - $30, I think . Jetstream are between $40 and $50 . You also free up the phone line . So what it comes down to is are you prepared to pay $15 - $20 per month for the convenience of an always-on connection that leave your phone line free, while taking away the frustration of slow surking and downloads .

Your call, but I lnow we'd never go back after 2 years on broadband .

293701 2004-11-19 01:50:00 It all depends what you do with it. If it's just emails and looking up answers to crossword clues in the Listener then for the price dialup's OK. I've got it and it sputters along about 49.3 kbps which is bit like the ads on TV. When it slows up you can make a coffee, feed the cat, interact with humans, all that sort of stuff.

If the $$$$ is not an issue then go for it. If it is and you're a lite user and it's not driving you up the wall then stay with the dialup.

(PS Dialup cost me 10 a month.)

PPS We will be all on broadband one day, and there will be the option of SuperBroadband.

IJGOAO. (It just goes on and on.)

293702 2004-11-19 02:40:00 I use Jetstream at home, but often have to use dialup on my laptop when I am travelling. It is hard to cope with the sloooooowwwwww connection once you get used to the speed of adsl, so if you make the change, you will never go back ("How are we going to keep them down on the farm, once they have seen Paris" as the old song goes).

However, the single biggest advantage is freeing up the phone line for telephone calls. If you live in a "shared phone" situation, or you run a home business, it is definitely the way to go.

293703 2004-11-19 07:24:00 Cheers everyone, the phone line being free is a good reason as the phone line is competition with other people so based on all the replies I will get jetstream I think, I pay $27.95 for all you can eat on dialup, but its realllllllly slooooow. I use the net quite a bit, from several hours a month to sometimes, quite frequently actually up to 100 plus hours a month, but I wish it was faster as most of the time is waiting for pages etc to load....and its really hard to download some game demos. I average approx 1 mb every 4 mins with firefox V1 IE will take 8 mins per meg if lucky.

My whistle has been wet and I am now looking forward to chaning to JS very soon.
thanks to all for the advice, input, experiences with JS
