294028 2004-11-19 19:48:00 I've used a Psion 3a then 5mx since 1994. The 5mx screen is finally becoming a little dodgy and I need to change.

I like a small keyboard, want pocket PC software and need a camera for purposes of recording items at work. I don't need a phone - I already have one which is fine.

i-mate pocket pc or pda2k would be good but I don't need the phone and begrudge paying the extra. Most of the good pocket pc pdas don't come with a camera or a small keyboard. Latest I've seen is the ipaq rx3715 which has a good camera but no keyboard.

Anyone know of any worthwhile alternatives or of new versions likely to be released in the near future

Thanks

294029 2004-11-19 22:23:00 You may like to look at the following website for some ideas and reviews: Infosync (www.infosyncworld.com)

Reviews by Larry Garfield are usually reliable, and the website is up to date.

Do you have a particular reason for favouring pocket PC software over Palm OS? Usually Pocket PCs are much more expensive. I have used about six Palm OS handhelds, but have no experience with pocket PCs, so I cannot compare. I did try a Sybian based device, but thought it was horrible.

294030 2004-11-20 02:30:00 Thanks.

I thought pocket pc would be easier because of its compatibility with Microsoft Office and similar software.

294031 2004-11-20 03:31:00 I guess this is just a matter of personal preference - I prefer to keep away from investing in any more Microsoft products out of pure prejudice and wanting to save costs! I am trying to reduce my dependence upon Bill Gates. I have got Linux running on my pc, and will hopefully make the switch completely away from Microsoft at some stage!

If all you are concerned about is compatibility with Office etc, don't write off Palm OS on that account alone. I am not sure how much you want to spend on add on software, but I use Quickoffice on my Palm and it can deal with native Word and Exel files. Through QO you can port your Office files across to your pda, and QO will also deal with Word and Exel files that come in as attachments via email.

I read somewhere that PalmOS actually deals with Word files better than Pocket PC does(!), but unfortunately I cannot come up with the reference. You can also use Documents To Go to deal to Office documents, but I prefer Quickoffice.

As far as Outlook is concerned, PalmOS on my device (a Treo600) came bundled with a conduit that synchronises my desktop and handheld in terms of contacts and calendar. I don't synchronise emails (on my Treo600 I have it set to leave messages on the server, so they are still available to my pc the next time it connects).

For emails, you can use whatever comes with your PalmOS device, but I use SnapperMail, developed right here in Kiwiland. I am not sure what the mail programmes are like on Pocket PC but SnapperMail for PalmOS is excellent.

Just a thought - you may be able to get a cheaper PalmOS device with a keyboard, and spend some of what you save on QuickOffice. If you live in ChCh you could have a look at how PalmOS works on my pda if you like.
