| 293920 | 2004-11-19 08:38:00 | I have Windows XP using Word as part of OFFICE 2002. I have a need to exchange data with another user running XP with Version 6 of Word. When I send files by say a CD to install on the machine running Version 6 of Word, it will not open - apparently Word Version 6 is not compatable with other Word programs. Sounds screwy and I don't want to believe it - is it right and if so, how can this be overcome?. Surely Microsoft must know a way but I can not get an answer from them. Not sure, if it is right, why Microsoft would have made it so. Stumped. Hope there is some help available. Thanks. |

That has to be good for you. If you cheat and use Open Office, you are liable to be sued to gzunder for patent infringements, and serve you right, too. R2 |

| 293926 | 2004-11-20 08:55:00 | Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Microsoft provided a conversion download to solve this sort of problem. I'm sure I downloaded something from MS recently so I could open a Word file that was otherwise useless. Or am I confusing Word with Works? |

Sounds like you're talking about Word Viewer (office.microsoft.com), which will allow older versions to read later versions. |

Microsoft provide a Word 97/2000 Converter for Word 6 and 95 Users but this should work for Word 2002 as it uses the same file format. www.microsoft.com Tuktuk, just download and install the converter on the PC with Word 6, problem solved. As others have suggested you can also save the document in Word 6 format. In Word 2002, click File, Save as..., click the drop down box to save as type and select "Word 6/95". Doing this will cause loss of some more advanced features introduced into the later versions of Word but will make them compatible. If you frequently transfer files between the two systems you can set the default file format to Word 6 by clicking Tools in Word 2002 and selecting Options.., click the save tab and change the default format dropdown to "Word 6/95". |
