You have just said if "Henry Ford" did not make cars, most of the world would not be using them.

Would you care to justify your comments on "Microsoft".

Remembering, that many attribute the "production line" to Ford.

Something put to good use by union forces in the American Civil War at the "Brown Bess" rifle production plant.

294440 2004-11-21 05:54:00 My initial comment was probably too simplified for what I was trying to say, but here is my explanation.

It was because of Microsoft and it's Windows software which caused the worldwide spread of computers, especially at the rate which it went at. Macs were too expensive for most home users, Unix was not practical, Linux was in it's early stages, others such as Acorn's, Atari etc. simply did not develop at the rate Windows did. Windows provided the user-friendly interface which allowed people to get into computing, and the IBM compatible PCs provided a price-point much more reasonable for home users.

Today, Macs are still only mainly used by high-end graphics and video professionals, and are still expensive in relative terms. Unix is only used by servers, and Linux is used by the more computer-able people. A large number of features (not security however:)) in Linux are based around Windows. Windows is still the most commonly used OS in the world by far. Now you could probably argue that all comes from Apple/Mac, as yes, Microsoft did effectively steal the ideas from them, the factor that Microsoft played was in making computers mainstream, and "putting a computer in every home" as Bill Gates (or someone from Microsoft) was quoted saying.

Programs like Wordperfect, Quattro Pro and others have been "copied" in a way by Microsoft, and heavily promoted so people know about them. People buy these programs for their computers, as Microsoft puts it out there. Although I do admit that Microsoft isn't responsible for many of the actual ideas out there, they are responsible for promoting PCs in such a way that computers have become so mainstream in today's society.
