294038 2004-11-19 22:26:00 I'm vaguely considering upgrading to the 2meg plan at an additional cost of $20 per month, and wondered if it'll improve my online gaming speeds considerably?

Why it's not a stupid question is because 1) my ISP (Orcon) seem to suggest that because they control the speeds for 256k, they don't have influence over Telecom's 2mb plan; and 2) upload speed is only slightly improved, from 128k to 196k, which may throttle the advantages of the 2meg down speed.

294039 2004-11-20 02:38:00 What kind of pings are you getting on local/international servers?

Every bit of speed helps :D I'm unsure about UBS performance though...

Anyway, yes there should be an amazing, thrilling increase in speed, which you should find directly increases your general happiness :).

294041 2004-11-20 03:11:00 he isn't referring to speed as such,but game pings.

You can have superfast net feed and still have a terrible ping.

As to wether it will make much difference?...probally not,but its near impossible to say unles you try it and see.

Greg,Didnt u just get upgraded from 12k to 256k?...did that affect game ping?

294042 2004-11-20 04:03:00 Well in the last week I have gone from 256k to 2meg and latency is about the same. Of course you can push much more info through so the lag is better.

Someone tried telling me last night that their ping for NZ servers had dropped to around 30 - 40 ms. I remain ever sceptical about that one.

It was a fair while ago, and didn't notice much improvement
