2004-11-22 06:36:00 | (those kissed were for u by the way Metla!) While I'm at it, could I consider a powercolour? (Just that it has Counter Strike CZ included) or should I stick with an original ATI? eg. Powercolor ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128M 256-bit 2.8ns DDR, 380/680MHz, Full Version Counter Strike Condition Zero And whats the 2.8ns stand for?!

As long as the card you are looking at has the specs that line up with what it is being marketed as then it will be a rocket ship of a card. The 9800pro is a good fast card no matter what manufacturer. |

2004-11-22 07:04:00 | Ahh email not get through? Try: decimator /at\ paradise . net . nz Make me an offer . :) Apparently Ati were producing their own version of the card, and this put them in direct competition against the companies they were selling the 9800 design to . So Ati dropped out of making the cards and left that up to the other manufacturers but they still had to follow the reference design closely . There were only two OEMs that could manufacture 6 layer PCBs at the time, and that was Ati and Sapphire . So Sapphire have made most of the cards out there today, and they sold the pre-made boards to other manufacturers like Gecube who can add their own RAM to it etc but they still have to follow the reference design . How closely they adhere to that is another matter . I say the Ati originals are generally considered better than Gecube because if you look on Pricespy at the cheapest 9800's they are usually the Gecube Encore Edition, which has underclocked core and cheaper memory . I can't find out the exact details though . You'll notice they also have Encore, Gamer, Extreme, and various other versions of the same card where they have overclocked them and used cheaper, slower RAM etc (dodgy) . The overclocked ones cost a lot more too . Also some of the cheaper ones on pricespy are the 128bit memory versions which you have to look out for . With the Ati originals and the Sapphire made ones, there isn't too much difference between them really, but the Ati ones are considered by many to be made of better components . My card in particular has Samsung RAM rated at 350Mhz (700mhz DDR), though when running at normal speed, they've only got the memory running at 338Mhz (676Mhz DDR), as per the Ati reference design . So in actual fact it's underclocked and I can overclock that safely because the RAM chips are rated at 700Mhz speed . Just one of the good things you can do with an Ati original .

2004-11-22 08:14:00 | how long will a 9800 pro last for? in latest games | Nighthawk (5846) | |
2004-11-22 08:46:00 | > how long will a 9800 pro last for? in latest games It can already play games like Doom 3 at 30+ fps at 1280x1024 which is definitely playable, and Half Life 2 at the same resolution at about 60+ fps with 2xAA. When newer games come out you can just lower the resolution or something and it will still be at playable frame rates. :)
