295077 2004-11-22 11:31:00 Database Development: Search and Replace Table Fields & Tablenames

Does anyone know of tools that can Search and Replace:
Table Fields
Table Names?

One way is to convert it all to SQL then try and adjust the text and reimport it but thats a bit of a bugger, or does someone know a program to do that automatically?

CuteSQL had export to DDL but it exported MS Access Data to MS SQL which made import again hard

295078 2004-11-22 20:47:00 Don't know what you're trying to do or what program the Db is setup in, but I would have thought this wouldn't be easy (or allowable) or wise especially if you're altering data that relies on primary/foreign keys etc
Altering these would stuff up any queries, forms etc

295079 2004-11-22 23:36:00 Try http://www.tek-tips.com/

You should be able to find the specific software that you're using and then search for the help you need.

295080 2004-11-23 00:11:00 It's a long time since I have used any databases, but doesn't changing the names of tables and fields amount to defining a new database? Graham L (2)
295081 2004-11-23 00:39:00 What database programme are you using?

295082 2004-11-23 00:51:00 Almost Always Access [40-50 Databases]
Sometimes MySQL [1-50 Database]
Rarely MS-SQL [2 Databases]

295084 2004-11-23 01:06:00 For Access there is a thread on MrExcel that discusses changing field names within a table here (www.mrexcel.com) , I'm not having much luck finding any references to changing the table names but it might be worth your having a quick search through here (www.mrexcel.com), or here (www.utteraccess.com) or lastly this article (office.microsoft.com) from MS might point you in the right direction.

Can't help with the SQL databases sorry.

I'm going to resist the temptation of asking why you want to change the table and field names but I think it will be quite a lot of work depending on the number of queries, forms, reports, macros and VB coding that will also need changing. It might be more trouble than it's worth.

295085 2004-11-23 01:12:00 ... and I forgot to mention, if you want to join up at [url=http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/index.php]MrExcel/url] and ask your question on their forum, you'll find plenty of database-savvy people (no disrespect intended to PF1 or its members) more than willing to help. Plus it would be nice to have a few more Kiwis on their forum :D andrew93 (249)
295086 2004-11-23 01:12:00 There may be some form of aliasing. Changing the actual table and field names gives lots of scope for "challenges". :D Graham L (2)
