295014 2004-11-22 09:49:00 Many months ago a thread was posted on these forums regarding an inability to right click on the start menu, and in effect not allowing the user to sort his start menu effectively . 2 months ago I installed servicepack 2, and this problem decided to invade my once perfect workspace . After investigation and coming up with an appropriate solution, I set out to remedy my issue .

The saviour it seemed, was to be located in the "taskbar and start menu" properties, under customize (for the xp menu, not classic), in the advanced tab . After asking around, I determined that something was missing . In the start menu box, I was told there was an option to "enable drag and drop" . Alas, as you can clearly see in the attached picture, it is not :( . Nor is it a stand alone option .

Any help regarding where on earth my little drag'n'drop friend has gone would be much appreciated :~)

Cheers
Spotila

295016 2004-11-22 19:22:00 Found this in Google:

Unable to right-click on the folders or shortcuts in the Start Menu:

When you right-click on a folder or a shortcut in the Start Menu, the context menu does not appear . Also, dragging and dropping of files/folders in the Start Menu may not be work .

To solve the problem, enable the "Enable Dragging and Dropping" Option in your Start menu properties . Follow these steps:

For Classic Start Menu
Right-click Taskbar, Properties, click Start Menu tab, choose Customize
Enable the option "Enable Dragging and Dropping . "

For New Start Menu
Right-click Taskbar, Properties, click Start Menu tab, choose Customize
Click "Advanced" tab and enable the option "Enable Dragging and Dropping . "

NOTE: If the option Enable Dragging and Dropping is not available, it's due to a policy setting . If your system is in a Domain, contact the Network admin . If not try this:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit . exe) and navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

Backup the registry before editing it . See instructions about registry backup

In the right-pane, set the NoChangeStartMenu value to 0 in the above key .

-or-

Use the following REG file . Copy the contents to a notepad and save as a . REG file ("filename . reg) . Then, double-click the saved file and save information to registry .

-------------Cut ->------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5 . 00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoChangeStartMenu"=dword:00000000

-------------<- Cut------------------

295017 2004-11-22 20:39:00 Hey Spotila,
I clicked on your link and guess what? not only is your option gone but all I saw was a blank page. Is that your link or my browser?

295018 2004-11-22 23:42:00 copy n paste the link into your browser :~x

I tried editing the registry to fix the policy setting. Low and behold, the "NoChangeStartMenu" binary doesn't even exist! The are only a few entries in here:
NoActiveDesktop
NoDriveTypeAutoRun
NoLogoff
NoSMHelp
NoUserNameInStartMenu

If you could give a me a more detailed explanation on how to enter the part between the ---cut---- ---cut---- thing, that would be appreciated :~

Cheers~

295019 2004-11-22 23:46:00 Cause I get an error when I Copy the contents to notepad and save as a .REG file ("filename.reg), then double click the saved file and save information to registry.
"Cannot import c:\documents:Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error"

295020 2004-11-22 23:51:00 mmmk update, I managed to get it entered into the registry, well atleast it says it has.
Though in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer , there is no change. No new entries have been added :(

295021 2004-11-23 00:52:00 Check your . reg file that you made . Make sure that it just has the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5 . 00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoChangeStartMenu"=dword:00000000

Also, make sure that you take out the space in the word Policies (otherwise it looks like Polici es)

295022 2004-11-23 03:48:00 ok I've successfully got the entry into the registry. Even so it doesn't appear anything has changed. There still is no option to enable drag n dropping in the customize-->advanced list of start menu option :~ spotila (6435)
295023 2004-11-23 04:25:00 Try checking this setting.
IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Security/ Internet/ Custom Level/ Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste.
If no luck try this site for a "Drag and Drop" XP fix. The zip file is a direct link to down load the file (21kb).
