294933 2004-11-22 07:13:00 Now Heres the story,

I have a Dual PIII motherboard "Msi 694d" Now the problem is its AGP 4x doesn't run at 4x but at 2x. This isn't just my motherboard but everyones "Msi 694d", Even thou its set in the bios at 4x its still runs at 2x

Now i have done some research on Very old forums ( 3 or 4 yrs old )not worth replying to and there are some ways to fix it. But None of them seem to work for me ( since its about 3 or 4 yrs old they seem to be using win2k) Can anyone give me a hand on finding a solution or articles about it?

Here are my current specs if you need them

Msi 694d Pro Motherboard
Dual 1ghz PIIIeb
2gb pc133 ram ( 4x 512mb kingston)
80gb hdd and 40gb hdd,
Radeon 9250 128mb.
Windows XP Pro SP2

If you need anymore advanced specs i can post at request.

Another Question, If i don't find a solution to fix it, and i decide to upgrade my GFX card to say a 9800 pro, would it run on 2x? and if it does how much different will it run from a 4x?

Thanks

294934 2004-11-22 07:24:00 Bios update for the motherboard.

If you shell out for a new video card then you would be best to buy a new mobo at the same time,2xagp would kill off all the gaming goodness that you would be after in buying a 9800pro.

I see in your specs you have a dual 1gb p3 setup.

In which case you might as well buy a entire new comp to run a 9800pro.

Not meaning to be harsh....just calling it how i see it.

294935 2004-11-22 07:29:00 The upgrade was just an example, theres no point getting a 9800 for a p3 system, but i am getting a card slitly better than the 9250..

For the bios update. is it possable to roll back to the old version if something goes wrong?

294936 2004-11-22 07:38:00 um....it depends on how it goes wrong,if it fails to load the new bios then the board is efectivly dead.

you can swap back and forth between new and old bios's to your hearts content....untill it goes wrong....then refer to comment above...

294937 2004-11-22 07:45:00 Chipset drivers usually fix this problem. Find out who made the chipset for your motherboard and then download the drivers, they usually include an AGP driver and boost performance. You might even find them on the motherboard manufacturer site. PoWa (203)
294938 2004-11-22 07:57:00 Bios is already latest version, Updated Chipset drivers, Still 2x,

can anyone help me search about this board, you guys might know better sites than i do

294939 2004-11-22 08:08:00 A mate overseas found this
"forum.msi.com.tw

Someone fixed it who had a nVIDIA gfx card, with a nVIDIA tweaker... But i have ATI You think it will still work?

294940 2004-11-22 09:46:00 What a surprise that you have a via chipset. Not. They suck big time (even their new chipsets). In fact I would guess that via may have suggested in their forums that your problems are caused by your power supply or something like they did with the apollo pro 133a chipset (try running a creative labs sound card and a Nvidia graphics adaptor in one of those suckers)

Personally I would put in a RAID solution and make a server out of that box.

You might be able to force it into 4x mode with wpcredit but you may find it's dropping back to 2x for a good reason. You might have some trouble finding a PCI Configuration Register (PCR) file for your chipset, however google would be a good place to start.
Good luck, I spent 2 years mucking round with my VIA motherboard and ended up stuck at AGP 2x. It took VIA also 2 years to produce a 4in1 package which was stable even at 2x. I love my new Intel chipset :-)

294941 2004-11-22 10:02:00 Well i have another of the same motherboard which when i get my act together will make into a server..
This pc was a project of mine to "fiddle" with dual cpu overclocking, it is now used as an average gaming system when mates are over, atm it runs fine with games but im seeing if i can get the 4x to work to see if it would boost gaming performance . I tryed the program i posted earlier, and managed to get 4x to work, but when i loaded a game ( final fantasy XI ) and ran around a bit ( about 15 seconds ) the computer locked up and i had to reset, finding it was back to 2x.

That Program was made for nVIDIA so i might borrow a nVIDIA gfx card from a friend and test if it still crashes at 4x.

Is there any other chipset drivers i can use besides VIA?
