295379 2004-11-23 03:55:00 For the past couple of hours, my AVG Email scanner fires up every five minutes although no progs are running on Win 98. ZA tells me it is trying to send a packet from port 1121 to 203.96.152.32, which is Paradise SMTP. I have ni idea what might be doing it. Ideas ??Spybot and Ad-aware report nothing. I have no idea what might be doing this. Do you ?

Cheers Tony

295380 2004-11-23 04:04:00 Welcome to the perils of AVG 7.0 - Once again I have spent hours trying - in vain - to get the Email bit working. You send something, it goes, then connects again - to god knows where. Read all the forums etc, but no joy. Finished up Disabling Email, and also found you had to disable the Plugin and in the main Resident Sheild, Email scan. Sorry no help.

295381 2004-11-23 05:08:00 What email client do you use? AVG 7 inserts itself between programs like OE and your ISP. Mail goes 1st to AVG gets checked then delivered to either your ISP SMTP server or to your email client. On the Grisoft site there are PDF manuals covering ZA configuration etc. Turning off outgoing mail certification (silly idea anyway) helps. PaulD (232)
295382 2004-11-23 05:21:00 I should add that problem remains even with AVG Email scanning off !
uninstalled 7, problem stopped. Reinstalled, back again at once.

Revert to 6 ???

295383 2004-11-23 05:36:00 Agree - found that I had to go to - Resident Sheild - properties, and turn it off there as well. I have also tried Avast, but had a few Email probs as well. AVG 6.0 is best, but what to do at end of Dec, I'm not sure. Pray?

295386 2004-11-23 09:34:00 I have the AVG 7 mail scanner on both my main PC and my proxy server. I had a few bounced mail probs before configuring it, but after configuration it all went fine (and has ever since). Something I have learned to avoid: NEVER install plugins for mail programs you don't use. It seems to kill the email feature.

295387 2004-11-23 09:53:00 I was wondering why so many people were having problems with AVG 7, I realised I did not install the plugins due to the fact that they had the ability to scan any mail that went through those specified ports, so I figured it wasn't worth adding the additional plugins to the mail clients if they were going to be sent through it anyway.

295388 2004-11-23 10:15:00 PeterH , you could try Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/) as it doesn't utilise the e-mail scanning. Pheonix (280)
