295265 2004-11-23 02:11:00 Hi, my laptop' internal modem does not work now after the recent time's on off now and then. The builtin modem does not work but the Lan is still going. I went to DSE and bought a PC Card 56k with an Intel chipset. I came home plugged it in without installing any drivers, with the win2k SP4 drivers it worked. I downloaded my emails and downloaded half of the 6MB Msn Messsenger download til it stopped.

Then I installed the DSE drivers from the CD. Now I am either getting a connection of 46k, 33k, or 31k. However I am unable to open any webpages. I am unable to connect with my older version Msn messenger. All it open is the my homepage and microsoft.com which I believe may be held in temp folder from the first time I accessed them.

At times too the system crashes when I have to pull the cord out. The computer is stalling that it takes longer to startup, actually begin dialling, switching to other applications...

I switched back to the modem driver used natively by windows and I get the same issues...

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

295266 2004-11-23 02:28:00 Does anything come up when u try and go to any site? Or do u only get 404 - Page not found errors??

If you get 404 errors, it could either be the ISP's servers playing up, or as I found out the other week, when fixing a mates PC, it was hit with the worm W32.Beagle.AV or AW.

Which will also do the same thing. You can connect, BUT this worm disables firewalls (If you have one installed). And if you have Internet Security installed, it shuts this down, and stops ccproxy.exe the service, which in turn stops you accessing the net, or going anywhere, at all. I would scan for viruses, and spyware also, with Spybot or Ad-aware.

295267 2004-11-23 02:36:00 I don't think its the ISP as I am using that login name as dialup on this older PC to type this msg.

I don't get any errors by the modem itself. It dials as I said. The IE window pops up and says the normal error "page unavailable". That classic MS page. Yeah maybe 404 can't remem the exact code thou.

Laptop was just formatted. A the first time today when it was working was the first time it was connected to the net, for like 20mins. Now not anymore.......

I may get a swap .. then a refund..

295268 2004-11-23 03:41:00 I would either get a refund or do a scan for viruses etc as well. Spacemannz (808)
