Just make sure that hda2 is the partition that holds /, otherwise you will need to subsitute the number to match that partition.

If you are unsure which partition Yoper's / is on, run this command from the prompt first:

fdisk -l

295214 2004-11-30 06:15:00 ok im back into windows but still i cant see lilo at start up.:(
this is what happend when i entered those commands
cd mnt = just went to next line which i think is normal

mkdir yoper = samething

mount /dev/hda2 yoper=i had to change the a from hda2 into c so it read hdc 2

chroot yoper = nothing so that command went ok, no error messages

/sbin/lilo = i got a whole list of error messages
WARNING: '/proc/partions' does not exist, disk scan by passed
WARNING: Partition 1 on /dev/hdx is not marked active
WARNING: unable to determine video adapter in use in the present system.
Added YOS *

so then i set partition 1 active and retried the commands and i got:
WARNING: unable to determine video adapter in use in the present system.
Added YOS *

here (sal.neoburn.net(Large).jpg) is a pic that i took with my digi cam, i hope you can see something at the partioning part as it is not completely clear but try zooming in

cheers

295215 2004-11-30 06:27:00 Yoper's root is on hdc1 and not hdc2 according to QTParted.

Just how do you have your HDD set up? Do you have your CD drives on Primary Master and Salve and your HDD on Secondary Master? This might be behind Lilo's confusion to where the MBR is ...

295216 2004-11-30 06:38:00 good question, after my broken cable discovery i only have 1 cd rom hooked up instead of 2, but i think my cd rom is on the secondary and my hard drive is on primary( the are both on seperate ide cables) is there any way to tell from windows? cos i dont wanna reboot at the moment,
my new rounded ide cables are on the way, they should arrive in the next few days

295217 2004-11-30 06:42:00 You ask how the CD Rom is set up jen, becuase hdc is normally reserved for the CD in Linux?

I would say the MBR is probably on hda1 if that's where windows is installed and Lilo is on hdc1, would that make sense Jen.

Why is the /yos/ram drive on hdc3 shown as NTFS? I haven't noticed that before. And I presume the hiddem /yos/ram is the extended partition, hidden 0.49MB?? doesn't look quiet right, although I we can't see the top of the tree nor the end of the bar.

295218 2004-11-30 07:32:00 Did you create free space at the beginning of your drive and push XP to the end when you partitioned it?

Normally hda is your Primary Master HDD, hdb your Primary Slave, and hdc Secondary Master with hdd your Secondary Slave.

*Most* people have their CD devices on hdc.

295219 2004-11-30 07:40:00 i have no idea what you are saying Jen sorry, but here is my set up that i gathered from the bios:

Primary master-none
Primary slave-cdrw
Secondary master-HDD
secondary slave-none

when i get my new cables im goning to put my hdd as the primary master, dvd rom as the primary slave, and my secondary master my cdrw, oh and i had a fdd to hook up as well. that sounds ok or not? im going to do this in the next few days when i get my cables arrive.
thanks for all the help you guys have given me,:D

Sorry, I should of clarified that a bit more. I meant that it looks like in your screenshot of QTParted that you created free space at the beginning of the drive for Linux instead of at the end so that Linux comes after XP in the partition order.
