2004-11-26 04:07:00 | Basically, Linux comes with almost all Drivers you'll ever need. Basically it requires you to "modprobe" (AKA load) the driver. This may be done automatically for you, it may now. If you have Knoppix, or another LiveCD, grab this file: linmodems.technion.ac.il Save it to your HDD, boot Knoppix and run: gunzip ./scanModem.gz && chmod +x scanModem && ./scanModem This will make a folder called "Modem" containing all the info you'll need about your Modem. If you dont have a Live Linux CD, dont worry about it, tackle it once you're in Yoper. Just make sure you dont go to drastic measures - Lilo should _just work_ If it doesnt, download and save to your hdd: freebooks.by.ru Good luck, its honestly dead easy!

2004-11-26 08:44:00 | howdy doodly, i have just installed yoper and im actually in windows! no thats a step a head, but i have a little problem, the screen for me to go into yoper is gone, it doesnt appear when i start my pc, i have re installed yoper 2 times and the same result, i cant get into yoper, what can i do?? | Prescott (11) | |
2004-11-26 11:59:00 | By the screen is gone, do you mean that your still at a DOS like black screen with white text without the normal login window? If yes, type startx at the prompt. Once in go to Yoperconf (desktop link) and run SaX2. I take it you've set up a user and root password during installation.

2004-11-26 20:16:00 | Geez - The Boot-loader you mean? Hmm..... Boot the Lilo CD and punch in the following when you get the Command-Line: mkdir /mnt/yoper mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/yoper chroot /mnt/yoper /bin/bash /sbin/lilo exit reboot Basically what that does: Makes /mnt/yoper on the Live CD (Which is really just a temp folder in RAM) mounts your Yoper Installation so you can access the files (It may not be /dev/hda2 - Try hda3, hda4, hda5, right up til about hda9. If its not your Primary Master HDD then post back) chroot basically says "From now on, I want this to be my virtual root folder" - This being your Yoper Installation. So you're essentially "in" your installation /sbin/lilo will install Lilo - However Im a bit skeptical about the lilo.conf file :-/ exit will exit the chroot reboot will restart your PC. Before you punch in "reboot", Im going to be a real pain and ask you to: cat /proc/partitions This way should something go wrong, we know exactly what your partitioning scheme is. From here we can work some magic in getting them to Dual-Boot should "lilo" not play nicely ;-) Fingers crossed it works straight-up for you! Chill.

2004-11-26 22:51:00 | i must have stuffed that post up, yeah the screen that i choose for me to go into yoper is gone, i think that must be called lilo and it just insnt there, when i boot up my pc it just loads straight into xp and im not asked if i wanna go into yoper, so i cant even get into yoper >I take it you've set up a user and root password during installation. yip >Boot the Lilo CD and punch in the following when you get the >Command-Line: >mkdir /mnt/yoper >mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/yoper >chroot /mnt/yoper /bin/bash >/sbin/lilo >exit >reboot this is the next screen after i have to press enter, then it had blue writing on the left and says type yoper to enter set up, so here i entered mkdir /mnt/yoper and it says mkdir: cannot create directory '/mnt/yoper' readonly file system what can i do now??

2004-11-27 00:28:00 | Ah ok, I misunderstood, thought you had got past the boot loader. Better wait for Chill, Jen C or someone to get back who has a bit more experience than me in these matters. I'm probably about where your at at the prompt :D But did you punch in a line at a time and hit enter after each? I'm assuming that's what Chill meant in the instructions although, he wasn't explicit about that. | Murray P (44) | |
2004-11-27 00:53:00 | yip, i entered one line at a time and pressed the enter key after each line, after the first line it gave me the message, so then i tried the next line and the same thing. | Prescott (11) | |
2004-11-27 08:27:00 | bump:p | Prescott (11) | |
2004-11-27 09:09:00 | You'll have to wait for the guru's I'm afraid. In the meantime, I'll send you Knoppix or Mepis so you can check things out if need be.
