1359752 2013-11-13 18:05:00 Hi Guys

I am taking my laptop to Hamilton to see a friend.

We want to go to a cafe or restuarant and look up something for her.

If I find a free wireless network - will I need a password to access it and if so, where do I get the password from ?

Also is there a hotspot in Chartwell ?

Thanks

1359753 2013-11-13 18:55:00 The CBD has free wifi but I'm not sure if it allows free access to the net or limits it somehow. If you are a telecom smartphone user there are free hotspots at some phone boxes that can be accessed, they have big pink signs on them.
Also a lot of Cafes have WiFi available for their customers. I think McDonalds has WiFi as well if you park close enough?

Chartwell square has a lot of Wi-fi but I don't think any of it is free, the starbucks and village cinemas both show up on my phone when I'm there so maybe buying a coffee and asking might sort it out :)
Good luck.

1359754 2013-11-13 19:44:00 What Dugimodo said. Robert Harris will give you access if you buy a coffee. Malls often have multiple hotpots with free access, and also you don't need to be a Telecom customer to use theirs. Greg (193)

They txt you an acess code. I got a pretty good speed test from the one at 5 X roads though, if I lived nearby I could almost ditch broadband.
There's a phone box across the street from my house, I'm wondering if it'll ever get a hotspot and then my home Wi-Fi would be redundant.

It depends on the place offering the free wi-fi. Some cafes have a password printed on their receipts to ensure that you pay for food or drink before you get free access. Others like McDonalds, as previously mentioned, allow you to just log in without a password, which you can do if you are close enough to receive the signal. They do have a data cap, however. Some libraries also offer free wi-fi but I don't know about Hamilton. I know Tauranga's libraries don't, the tight a***s. :(
