What a load of rubbish. There isn't even any mention in the article how the speeds were tested.

I wonder how many of the '100mbps' customers who are 'only' getting 90% of the advertised speed have a modem and PC with gigabit ethernet ports? It's not possible to see the full 100mbps through a 100mbps ethernet port due to overheads etc, which is well known. In fact, around 90% of that would be about bang on.

FUD.

1359481 2013-11-11 21:25:00 ^^ Yeah that's a pretty terrible article :-/

Anybody worth their salt when it comes to networking knows you don't plug in two PCs together on a 100mbps connection and actually *get* 100mbps... Overheads are a ***** huh? ;)

1359483 2013-11-11 22:45:00 Thanks Alex - looks like quite a good setup actually. My comment on the 100mbps still stands though. Just cause their device is gigabit, doesn't necessarily mean the main modem/router is, right? Or are all the fiber modems gigabit now? wratterus (105)
1359484 2013-11-11 23:03:00 Don't think so. 90% sure Orcons offering aren't anyway. Alex B (15479)
1359485 2013-11-11 23:12:00 Right. Doesn't explain the few getting really bad speeds, but IMO this basically invalidates the main part of that article. Stuff is bad for not researching their articles properly.

I setup VDSL for someone the other day - they were syncing at 60mbps, and got that on cable, but only around 30mbps on wireless (which for their setup was exactly what was expected). They were most distraught that they couldn't get 60mbps on their iPad. Didn't help when I explained that nothing they were doing would benefit from the extra speed.

1359486 2013-11-11 23:58:00 Yeah the problem with promising these faster speeds is consumers are gonna get pissy like that...

Can't explain to most people that just coz they get 100mbps to their router doesn't mean their WiFi operates that speed :-/ Your iPad example is perfect.

The ONTs have gigabit ports, as does the probe that Truenet provide, so the limitation here is the actual connection speed. I suspect a big chunk of the difference is quantity of users on the Chorus gear and also potentially the bandwidth the RSPs are providing. If it works the same as their xDSL probes, which I imagine it does, it simply measures speeds to some predetermined sites. Typically it's used to compare ISPs, but in this case someone on Fibre in a chorus area whose ISP is, say, Orcon, is in the same basket as someone from Telecom or HappyInternetLand, which imo makes it harder to compare. If 5 of your 6 samples for Chorus fibre are HappyInternetLand customers, who only have 1Mbps of bandwidth available, your results will be skewed. They only have one probe on a Telecom UFB connection currently - so how representative of the experience that, for example, a Telecom UFB customer will get, can that possibly be? Not very.

TrueNet usually do pretty good data, but they need a good probe base to build it. Sounds like they're aiming for 20 Telecom UFB probes (plus some form other ISPs) so will be interesting to see how it fleshes out.
