1359265 2013-11-09 07:38:00 I've heard it said that the old rating systems like SAE 20w-50 are laregly useless. Better to look at the SF / SG / SH grading... the further down the alphabet the 2nd letter, the better. That is, assuming the Toyota is a petrol engine. Dunno a thing about diesel.

I'll risk a small thread hijack with my own question...
Why does a 4 stroke lawnmower have recommended oil changes after 10 hours of running, when a vehicles 4 stroke engine can go 6 months or more of running on the same oil?

I think it would be because the mower is running in a lot more dust with a not as efficient air filter.

They are two completely different things, the first is a viscosity rating, the second is a service or duty rating, both are important.

Check with Toyota. They have a fair bit of experience. ;)

I checked that, however mine is a 1.5l Corolla.....it's not listed.
Husbands is.....anyway Repco said his and sons was 15w-40, and mine 20w-50. Bugger......the 15w-40 was $15, the 20w-50 was $39.

4A-FE is practically the same engine.

A 5A is hardly going to care what oil it runs unless you go chuck something stupid thin in it.
