| 1358826 | 2013-11-05 09:36:00 | Every year we have fireworks to celebrate the unsuccessful attempt to blow up the British House of Parliament. Every year we have injured children, traumatized animals, bush fires, noise and pollution, and waste overseas funds. In the old days there was a lack of colour, black and white films, and later black and white TV. Fireworks were spectacular. These days everything is coloured. In my opinion we do not need to ban fireworks. All we need to do is apply the existing explosive laws to fireworks, which are explosives. 1] Stockists of fireworks would need an explosives license and a special explosives magazine out side. Fireworks would not be transported on public transport. 2] Purchasers of fireworks would need an explosives license, and a magazine to keep them in. Nobody would bother to sell fireworks and no one would buy them. Only councils would buy them for public display, and comply with the regulations. |

In the old days there was a lack of colour, black and white films, and later black and white TV. Fireworks were spectacular. I doubt most people care what the original reason was. We have some injured children.....some scared animals, no bush fires. And TV is relevant?? I'm not personally for or against, we don't buy them now....but when son was young we did. We'd have the neighbours and their kids over, BBQ arranged and the men would light them...not the kids. From what I see, most accidents are from kids playing with them or young males doing something stupid. |

It wouldn't be too bad if it was only one night, but so far we have had fireworks and bangers Saturday, Sunday Monday and Tuesday, no doubt there will be more over the coming days and weeks and then more in Xmas and New Year, they are firework mad around here . There is obviously too much money around :) |

There will always be stupid people who do stupid things (and some not so stupid people who do stupid things anyway) and no way to ban fireworks just from the stupid. Maybe it is time we banned them from the general public. I do enjoy watching everyone else's out my window though :) and around here it goes on for weeks before and after the actual day. |

Maybe it is time we banned them from the general public. <snip> Snap! My proposal: Gather all fireworks to be imported for 2014 and store under Parliament in Wellington. (If there's too many, stick some under Auckland Council and Auckland Transport) On 5 November 2014, ensure all politicians and Auckland Transport managers are on site, light fuse and stand well clear. This is in keeping with the original intent of Guy Fawkes and will put an end to the need for Guy Fawkes. Pets can then live without fear of explosions between the end of October and New Year and the Fire Service can relax a bit more... |

If people want to ban fireworks then why not ban virtually every mode of transport; and the military too for that matter! | Greg (193) | ||
