1358629 2013-11-03 19:18:00 Hi Guys.

I have just ended up with a Freeview box, a Sony HD tv and a Sony DVd recorder. From my mothers estate, and my son-in-law gave me his old Freeview box.

I don't watch much tv these days.

But I do want to connect them all up before analogue goes on the 1st December.

Can anyone point me to a good summary on this subject.

Eg it seems that when you move a tv and freeview box that you have to go through the initial set ups again..
And which are best types of cable to use. RCA plugs or HDMI cable etc etc.

And where does the aerial go
And do I plug the DVD recorder into the tv or the Freeview box etc etc.

1358630 2013-11-03 20:22:00 Little bit tricky to give good advice when we have no idea what models the devices are, and what inputs/outputs they all have.

Using the DVD recorder (assuming it's doesn't have a freeviewHD tuner built in) is not very pretty, as you have to run an AV out from the decoder into the DVD recorder. Obviously the DVD recorder will still work as DVD player fine though.

HDMI is always the best option, if any of your devices don't have HDMI inputs/outputs, then component video is the next best.

1358631 2013-11-03 20:27:00 Thanks for that.

I was hoping to find a general guide, as I id not want to bother you all with my personal set up.

But it looks like I should do that as you seem willing to help.

1358633 2013-11-03 20:59:00 If the TV has HDMI use it, it'll be better than RCA. If the FV box records TV, I wouldnt bother connecting the DVD recorder Speedy Gonzales (78)
1358634 2013-11-04 00:57:00 Here's what I did .....

aerial to Freeveiw box
Freeveiw to TV , via HDMI
Freewveiw to DVDr, via RCA (to record).. HDMI could block recording + no HDMI on my DVDr .
DVD to TV , via RCA (no HDMI on my DVDr)

Just to complicate it, there are 3 completely different video out options when connecting via RCA . The 1 Yellow vid wire is the worst, 3 RCA vid cable option is much better .

1358635 2013-11-04 03:14:00 If the TV has built in freeview connecting the Aerial to both the TV and the freeview box Via a splitter will let you use the TV by itself and to use the freeview box for recording to DVDr - advantage is you don't have to watch what you're recording.

I took the expensive approach, ditch everything pre- HDMI, get an HDMI capable surround sound receiver, get a HDD recorder device like a TiVo or similar, connect everything Via HDMI to the receiver, connect it's output to the TV, connect the Aerial to the HDD recorder. Turn everything on, select the HDMI input on your TV, use the Receiver to slect the source, :):) In my case I only have a TiVO, a PS3, and a Media PC - allows playback of pretty much anything.
