Did you feel safe in that environment?

Safe? Yeah......p***** off, yes. Insulted, yes.
He lived with mummy still. Had his own room filled with expensive, quality hardware.
No idea what mum thought of it...

I thought it was pretty rude actually and I lost patience with him and his suspicious mate. Rather help people who care.

Yi'd think a guy like that would have at least one piece of blow up software ...

Back to the subject ... there used to be a company down here that wouldn't look at your TV, Computer or other electronic equipment unless you paid $90 up front to cover "investigation" costs, i.e. to find the problem, then they'd phone you and tell you how much the repair would cost you.

Not sure if they're still in business or not, but do any techs on here do a similar charge ??

1359818 2013-11-15 22:50:00 Back to the subject . . . there used to be a company down here that wouldn't look at your TV, Computer or other electronic equipment unless you paid $90 up front to cover "investigation" costs, i . e . to find the problem, then they'd phone you and tell you how much the repair would cost you .

Not sure if they're still in business or not, but do any techs on here do a similar charge ?? Not directly like that, BUT theres plenty of people that want you to spend time, which depending on the problem may be an hour to See what it's going to take to fix the problems . All for FREE .

Example: lets say the Computer is shutting down all the time - is it Software or hardware related ??? you may have to spend a reasonable amount of time to determine where the problem is .

Often while you can make a educated guess in a matter of minutes then to actually dig deeper you really have to start repairing the Computer or Saving data, all of which takes time .

There are some places that will charge you X amount to "inspect" the PC, then a quote is given to do the actual repair, if the repair goes ahead then the inspection fee is actually part of the repair cost, if not going ahead then you get charged the "inspection" fee .

1359820 2013-11-16 00:03:00 Nikon does a $75 investigation, then if you go thru with the repair the $75 is discounted on your repair quote. If you choose not to it just gets couriered back to you. If the repair does happen to cost more than the item it may say "uneconomical to repair". So .. you don't get that $1,000 to take maiware off the PC  Nomad (952)

This seems the fair way to go to me. The charging of a reasonable amount to inspect would weed out both the time wasters and also those who will not pay anyway. In a very large part what you are selling is your expertise/time. You can never get your time back so you should spend it on paying customers doing otherwise will just ensure you do not remain in business for long. Charge to much and you will have very few customers too little and you will go broke,

As an aside I have always been highly impressed with the number of experts amongst our members who freely give their time to provide advise on this forum. I have aquired most of my, albeit, limited knowledge by reading your posts. I cannot see how those of you in business can afford to spend the time but I am most grateful that you do so.

1359822 2013-11-16 22:26:00 We charge a $50 diagnostic fee on any jobs that come in to the workshop and this has to be paid up front.
In the past we've been stung with people bringing in machines for repair and then, after we look at them and find out what's wrong, and quote the customer to repair, they don't go ahead with the repair and we never see them again.

Aha, but you have done that wrong.....you give them an idea of whats wrong and an estimate.

Then if they decide not, no problem.

If they decide to go ahead, well they pay then...I had one like that, told him what it likely was and cost, went ahead on his say so, told him payment before he collected it and he never did.

So after leaving messages and such for ages did the ad in paper thing you have to do and sold it for the repair costs.

New owner was very happy...it wasn't a great machine, a bit elderly but hey, worked for what he wanted it for.
