| 1359804 | 2013-11-14 07:24:00 | the other side is you clean out the out of date broken AV which has to be "broken" out and OS repaired. freebie AV installed cause they won't pay for one, all updated, pc scanned and cleaned. then kids come home and tell them that its a 5 min job thats costs $10 and you didn't do anything. or the customer who jumps up and down because you didn't install the $2k worth of pirated software the last tech gave them. |

| 1359805 | 2013-11-14 07:36:00 | mind you customers can get there own back. back in my early days a mate had a pc that kept playing up. company kept blaming this/that and costing $$ to fix. in the end i found it had no air inlets causing it to over heat. also all the software was pirated. so he called the cops. under cover cop went in and bought a pc, which was loaded with pirated software and the firm was busted!. |

Some people get real upset when you refuse to put their pirated software back. Hands up ( OK SAD smile) how many here have heard / Seen -- But a mate gave it to me, its all legit, A CD/DVD hand written title with COA written in pen on the CD or on a piece of paper HMMMMMMM. :( OK sometimes they are legit, but a quick search of the COA on Google can bring up many posts of people complaining about the same product key. At this point I normally ask -- If its legit, has your mate paid $XX, and posted the COA on the internet so thousands of people can get it for free ?? Generous person ;) Others simply dont care. |

| 1359808 | 2013-11-14 08:50:00 | I've had the dubious pleasure of being 'volunteered' by out of town friends to help their parents with their computers. These kind kids drop a used computer into the spare room at their parents place, and are then puzzled why mum and dad can't operate it, let alone get email and Skype working. One that cost me a lot of my time involved literally starting from scratch, explaining where each component is turned on and off, and how to use a mouse. Yes, younger folk take a mouse for granted. Put a mouse into the hands of an arthritic geriatric however, and you'll find those bent fingers are resting on the wrong button, and it takes time to coach them into holding the mouse differently to get their index finger resting on the correct button. Then there's the challenge of achieving a double-click in the required time, and without the mouse being shoved off the icon during the process... all the time being patient, polite and friendly while they repeat their mistakes over and over again. Yes, it sounds crazy, but if a techie gets called, they should be paid for this torture, even if it does seem absurdly simple to those who are critical of the process. A tech is not a free substitute for a neighbour or a family friend. THey have a living to make, and are being kept from far more productive work. The same fellow I was helping got tired of his perfectly good inkjet (which simply had a paper jamb) and bought himself a new laser printer. At the first problem with the laser he removed the cartridge (with toner drum inside it) and took it to the shop for a replacement. He was puzzled when the guy in the shop insisted he only needed to replace the toner drum, so he went home and placed the new toner drum, *without the surrounding cartridge* into the cavity in the printer. He then called me once again when it refused to print. Imagine my surprise to open the laser to find a loose drum just sitting loosely inside the printer. Yeah, it sounds stupid, but without experience people do stupid things. This guy was a Lawyer during his prime, so he was far from being lacking for intellect or ability, and most certainly was not senile. Just inexperienced with the tech. |

| 1359809 | 2013-11-14 08:50:00 | $1,000 charge. Would be interesting to see a breakdown of the invoice ;) Just read the article :horrified :angry WTF are they kidding or what ? OMG From the article: Most of the time the hard drive needed to be re-formated, which often meant people lost all their personal data, What shower did they come down in, maybe if it had the cryptolocker Ransomware but other wise --- friggin idiots, theres several ways to get peoples data off, even if locked out of the system. Like to day - forgot to get the login password from the job I was doing - couldn't contact the person - so simply bypassed it then removed it ;) |

| 1359810 | 2013-11-14 18:38:00 | I would have just considered him to be my superannuation fund. If he is too stupid to engage common sense and help himself that is his problem, as long as he is happy to cough up for all the work done. Or is this the one who used his laptop in bed? :yuck: No. It was a gaming PC.....bit like one of JJJJJs buys.... No, I did it a few times, all the time I was there he'd watch his porn on the big TV and never listen to what I had to say. Then his mate started ringing and asking dodgy questions. It's not just about money, well it isn't with me anyway. That laptop guy - he did actually pay attention to my recommendations.... |

Hmm, well this is what started this thread wasn't it? Rip-off "techs".. They should be shot......$1000, I guess the conman saw the victim had been conned once, he could do it again with his "repairs". |

He couldn't even draw himself from the porn while you were there? Gotta wonder how he even keeps his pants on long enough to walk out to his letterbox. A psychologist would have a book to write if they could get that wnaker on their chair. Did you feel safe in that environment? |
