295696 2004-11-24 03:43:00 I'm looking at getting a new PC for home. My one project will be to download analogue video 8 camcorder tapes. Then write this to DVD. I have about 40 hours worth and realistically doubt that I'll do much editing.

Apart from that, teach the children about the Net etc, surf, burn pictures and probably play some games.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what I should expect/need? I'm thinking hardware but also software. Ulead for the video work?

Plenty of hard drive space for a start, two would be better that one IMO so you can dedicate one to your storage. Plenty of ram, 1GB or more. A goodish graphics card, but a flat out gamers card is not necessarily going to gain you much. Go for a motherboard which has more rather than less PCI slots so you can add in specific TV or video capture cards, 5 should do you, you could scrape by with three if LAN and RAID, if you want it, are onboard. Athlon 64 CPU, because I'm biased & it's cheaper for both the CPU and often other components. A decent monitor, 19" min for CRT (better quality colour & speed / $) or 17" TFT. Sound card, Audigy 2 and reasonable speakers so you can checkthe sound and edit if nec before burning and bunging on the TV in front of a gathered audience. Dual laler 16x DVD burner, NEC ND 3500 is nice and not too hard on the pocket. Good case with a good, quiete, 400W+ PSU.

There was a good write up on video/DVD editing and playing software in the Nov PC World. Dunno if it will run on Linux though ;)

295705 2004-11-24 04:59:00 Not so expensive version

a quality brand 754 pin board and either a sempron 3100+ or an A64 3000/3200 cpu,A gig of ram,120gb harddrive,or more as budget fits.A gig of ram,mid to lower end video card, whatever monitor takes your fancy,an audigy2 soundcard, good set of speakers.A capture device and a good quality DVD burner.

Slightly more expensive version.

939 pin board,3500+ cpu,a gig of high quality ram,a couple of big bad harddrives, mid range video card,audigy2, etc etc....
