295671 2004-11-24 03:25:00 Sorry couldn't resist. This article xtramsn.co.nz mentions the likely No 1 pc manufacturer (and Melta better not look unless he wants raised blood pressure). Dolby Digital (160)
295672 2004-11-24 03:31:00 It's not exactly new news that Dell are the biggest sellers of computers,Good on them. metla (154)
295673 2004-11-24 03:35:00 > Dell is expected to secure its spot as the No 1 PC maker and is expected to command market share of 30 to 40 percent, the report said.

If Dell account for 30% to 40% of the market then there's either a major conspiresy or they're delivering what the public want to buy. In the 70's people thought Japenese cars were rubbish.....

I guess that unsuccessful people just can't stand to see others being successful. Tall poppies?

In the late 90's and early 2000's The pc company accounted for the majority of the home pc buyers market in NZ. Quantity of sales does not always have a direct correlation with quality.
Using Japanese cars as an analogy is flawed. Japanese cars only got better and better.

This dosent make them the #1 PC manufacturer. it just makes them the "Largest volume producer'" with a fair degree of market controll.

The logic of Xtra is biased and flawed.

For this logic makes Microscam the #1 o/s Manufacturer in the world.

The intelligent know, they aint, even if they can not aviod using some of their product, some of the time.

why the surprise??? Who's dell's main customer base/focus ? corporates!!
dell can deliver a uniform product to them, at a competitive price, that adequately meets the needs of the corporate desktop user, i.e. generally not a gamer-most complicated application used is a spreadsheet-that's where the volume is !!! as for xtra, all they said is that Dell is poised to be the number 1 maker-didn't mention on what basis this is claimed, although reading between lines i think they just might be referring to market share/volume-purely a reflection of fact based on volume, not a statement of the quality or otherwise of the product-read things properly before you get the paranoia alarms flashing

Those comments were not necessary, and do nothing but cause further trouble.

295679 2004-11-24 10:34:00 I don't own a Dell, but I can see merit in their product ~ after all what percentage of the market is either a corporate or a run of the mill PC user .

Dells/HP/PackardBell branded computers will always be treated as inferior by a lot of PressF1 regulars, just like HotRodders will look down their noses at Toyotas .

The everyday computer user has no interest in an esoteric hand built PC, so more power to Dell

295680 2004-11-24 19:45:00 I think that in the next few to five years computers will be mass produced in China with a version of Linux for an OS and no upgrades available.

Can't even get in to the box. When something in the box goes that's it, biff it and get another one.

Cheap and easy. What a huge number of ordinary home users want. They don't want to put in a new soundboard or video card. They don't need a HDD big enough to float a whale in. They just want the thing to work so they can email Tanya in Queensland. etc.

IMHO :)
