295603 2004-11-24 00:23:00 Received a mailer from Ihug yesterday offering their GetAll dialup package with unlimited access for $19.95 per month, so long as you include your toll calls with Ihug (otherwise $27.95). Get All comes with free dial up accelerator that lets you surf the web up to 5 x faster.

Questions:
1. Has anyone had experience with Ihug's dialup accelerator
2. Does it really make any difference in data transfer speeds

I am currently getting between 6-8 kbs download speed on a "normal" 52,000 bps connection.

As I am currently on their Get60 plan at $19.95 per month with 60 hr limit, but without tolls, should I do the swap? Swapping tolls to Ihug is no big deal since I hardly make any anyway and their landline to mobile rate is cheaper than Telecom's.

295604 2004-11-24 00:27:00 "Dialup Acccelerators" heavily compress images before sending them to you. This makes pages appear to load faster, however it does not improve the actual connection speed. You will not get any faster than your "normal" connection speed in reality, but pages will load slightly faster due to the compressed down images (which apparently become heavily pixelated). somebody (208)
295605 2004-11-24 00:33:00 Yup, I wouldnt bother aboout that. Just block all ads, or kill all pics, it'll do the same thing lol. I would go for that all-up package, BUT since I dont have a phone (this is connected straight to the phonejack), so there's no point.

BUT I'm on the normal unlimited ($27.95 a mth). That's good enough for me.

295606 2004-11-24 00:34:00 Thanks for that. I guess if the page loads quicker then that has to be a positive. Looking at most sites, they always tend to to be heavily pictured to some degree. Does it make any difference if the site page is more "wordy" and less picture? Cptn Hotshot (3904)
295607 2004-11-24 00:51:00 I have used this on my parents computer when ihug had a free trial of accelerator and yes it does seem to speed up site with alot of pictures, but its not that much faster. what im trying to say is that its hard to notice a difference. And no it wont speed up sites that are manily text based nor will it speed up file transfers (ftp or p2p programs). I belive that their ad campain is flawed because there is no such thing as fast dialup. cold_fu5ion (3438)
295608 2004-11-24 01:47:00 i tried it once.....couldn't get it to even work at all.

if your getting "between 6-8 kbs download speed on a "normal" 52,000 bps connection" then i wouldn't complain to much. a lot of us are far worse than that.

295609 2004-11-24 02:07:00 Text loads quickly. The text Internet was perfectly usable on a 9600 bps line, and usable on 2400. What you often get these days to slow things down are text pages which are not text. They are pictures of text pages. :-( Graham L (2)
295610 2004-11-24 04:00:00 Thanks for all of your replies. If anything, I might do the swap (tolls as well) even if to get the unlimited hours at the same price I currently pay for 60 hours @ $19.95.

If I get any benefit from the dialup accelerator, then that has to be a bonus .... if not, then nothing lost.

295612 2004-11-25 19:24:00 You can get the accelerator separately, for cheap, and it will work on all ISPs, not just iHug. Do a search on CNET.COM - downloads.

I did use iHug's accelerator and it worked very well, but had to disable it since it deactivated my email platform - Pegasus Mail.
