295746 2005-05-05 23:29:00 I will say this, What I said I worded badly, I should have said that the system as outlined was over priced by $400 or so dollars.

I have helped a number of people on these forums get a value for money system Plod, Purchased from their outlets of choice and none of it has anything to do with my prices, Merely because I like to help people make an informed purchase.

As for Pricespy, Its all nice and well, But not a game I wish to play, The stakes are too high.

Yes Metla you are right it was your wording of things that put me off? I am not completely ignorant about computers maybe just a little

295749 2005-05-06 03:24:00 I must say that I respect Metla for his honest advice on this forum. He unfailingly helps despite knowing the sale is going to someone else. As I said, I'd happily buy from him if I didn't feel loyalty to the business I already deal with.

The question about the proposed system is whether it is a good one or could be improved. I'm now thinking about a Liteon or Asus drive instead of BTC.

Anybody suggest any other changes apart from Met?

295750 2005-05-06 11:41:00 I'd chnage the Samsung HDD to a Seagate. 5 year warranty apart from being a better brand.

I note a lot of people complain about the Invy PC stores. (Can't say I was impressed with them either when I was there) - but there are plenty of places that have online ordering - why not use one of them?
Ascent does free shipping for oen thing and has a good online order system. Pick a system and then re-configure it with what you want. Easy.

295751 2005-05-06 12:41:00 There is no other way I can slice it, Your paying top dollar for budget parts, Just looking up some pricelists my initial outburst was off, in their favour.

I would sugest you insist upon a better brand HD, ditch that video card for a 6600gt Extreme, and accept no increase in price.

Im off to look up some info on the motherboard, it maybe the only saving grace of that rig (apart from the CPU,but even then the cpu is a good buy because it represents good value for money, which ceaces to be the case when the buy price far excedes the value of the rig)

295752 2005-05-06 12:46:00 Motherboard is a cheapie,using a VIA chipset.

I hate to say it, but I would give every single item in that rig a big BIG thumbs down on every level, and damn it to hell if thats stepping on anybodies toes.

295753 2005-05-06 13:29:00 How are you going to capture / convert the analouge tapes?. I would recommend using a digital video camera. Either a Digital 8 where you can just place your hi8 tapes in the camera and transfer using the firewire or the pass thru (vivo) features on the camera to transfer via firewire to the computer. You can do it with a tv capture card but for best results use a digital video camera or a proper hardware capture card such as the Canopus ADVC 100 or one of the alteratives. Either way you will need to spend between $400-$1000 if you dont already have a digital camcorder. When you buy one of these products the usually throw in some video editing software but if your looking at buying some i would reckomend you go with Ulead Video Studio 8. It is very easy to get to grips with for a learner and has alot of features. You can download the demo off the Ulead website if you wanna try before you buy. lazydog (148)
295754 2005-05-06 14:02:00 Something else I just noticed .

Windows XP Pro 64bit Edition

Heh?

That’s crazy talk, madness and tom foolery .

There are scant few hardware drivers for it, and no software (which means no benefit apart from improved windows performance, which isn’t an issue with modern hardware) . Users have reported massive incompatibilities, poor performance and a wide range of issues .

Its the way of the future for sure, but has a long way to go before its a usable mainstream release .

Even the "enthusiasts" I see in other tech forums have returned back to the 32bit version, People that impress the hell outta me with their sheer knowledge and capabilities .

Oh dear . OK . No point asking for advice and ignoring it . I thought the 64 bit system would be good future proofing . However the latest PC World points out the lack of drivers, as you say . And a budget system? Not what I want or expect .

I guess a rethink is in order . :badpc: :badpc:
