295716 2004-11-24 08:17:00 Nothing wrong with a bigger TFT but we've already got a 29inch TV in the room. Plus I'd have to sit back a bit I expect to get perspective. Great ideas everyone, I appreciate the help.

Hadn't occurred to me to use the Windows software. I'm kind of infected by the anti-Microsoft feeling on PF1 although I try to fight it. ;)

295717 2004-11-24 08:34:00 Get a PC from one of those company's that throw theirs out after they get semi-outdated :-) add some ram, a vid card, and cpu, a whalah Nighthawk (5846)
295718 2004-11-24 08:50:00 Winnie, wack a 3rd hdd in, needn't be one of the vast ones, load a little distro on et voila join the growing crowd ;)

Check out that DVD software review in PC World, it had marvelous things like jitter control and auto what have you. You might be able to swing a bundle as Metla suggests, talks cheap anyway and you'll never now unless you ask.

Ever considered a projector you can feed your TV to as well (and the theater to house it in)?

295722 2004-11-26 05:30:00 Winston, ok, I am jumping in at the end of this post.... just want to suggest that when you talk to the sales/tech person prior to ordering your new system, go through each component, e.g. HD, RAM, graphics card, and ask them "What are the options for upgrading this component? Costs and advantages?" If they cannot tell you, or if there are no options, find another supplier.

I did this when I bought my new system a few months ago and was surprised that some of the upgrades did not cost that much. Usually computer shops have a really good priced PC that they advertise to (naturally) attract customers, but the components are usually average or below (such as the Warehouse Dell $999 units). I cannot recall of the the upgrades (do not have a geek head that remembers all) that I chose, but you will learn fast.

Good luck!

295724 2004-11-26 05:49:00 pppfffttt good luck trying to find a good custom built system for a low price in invercargill......... Prescott (11)
295725 2004-11-26 06:08:00 Prescott may be right. I don't know. It is fair to say that local computer specialists in Invercargill serve businesses. When I mentioned my requirements about 6 months ago, Online Computers estimated in the $2500 - 3000 range. Seemed fair to me but what do I know?

I'll certainly go through whatever is suggested part by part so I at least understand it.

Thanks again to all. :D
