295632 2004-11-24 01:16:00 I downloaded Avast anti-virus, when it goes to update, it says in a fault message that port 80 is down.
What is port 80??

295633 2004-11-24 01:20:00 Hi Bob, and welcome to PressF1

Port 80 is the internet port which your computer uses to access websites (ie. anything starting with http://). Often software communicates through Port 80 to access a "page" on it's website, to check if there are any updates, and if so, triggers their download.

It could be that your firewall, if you have one, is stopping Avast from accessing the internet. Check your settings there.

295635 2004-11-24 03:15:00 You wouldn't be using Xtra as your ISP, would you?

Xtra have been suffering a lot of troubles recently with their network.

295636 2004-11-24 03:27:00 Was there even a net connection up at the time? Avast may assume that there is a permanent link unless you tell it that you're on dialup. PaulD (232)
