| 295571 | 2004-11-23 23:35:00 | I would really appreciate some advice on finding a video card for a dell GX150. It has a 4x AGP slot but the case will only take a low profile card. I don't play graphics intensive games, but may do some simple photo editing using photoshop elements (does this even utilise a GPU?), and play a DVD now and then. Second hand is ok, and ideally it would work with both XP home and Mandrake 10. TIA |

| 295574 | 2004-11-24 01:30:00 | Hello there. I'd recommend a cheap card like...... nVIDIA geforce fx 5200 (128mb, 128bit, $60 - 90) or..... ATI Radeon 9200 (128mb, 64/128bit, $50 - 120) Any card manufacturer should be fine. Both these cards can are similar in performance and some come with a TV-out function. They perform at AGP 8X but if you motherboard supports 4X only then they will automatically adjust so they should work just fine. I can assure you they will handle DVD and Image processing fine, my friend has a 9200 and he uses it for gaming and his TV card. I have a 5200 and I have used it for gaming and it works just fine for me. The prices vary, you can pick a decent one up from some shops or websites like www.trademe.co.nz or www.pricespy.co.nz have cheaper ones selling, sometimes 2nd hand. Since these cards the lowest of low-end they sell for almost nothing these days. |

I personally always reckonmend ATI video card for SOHO machines, granted the FX5200 performs a lil better than the 9200 in games, but SOHO machine are rarely used for gaming. ATI has superior image quality to nVidia and run slightly cooler. Something like this (www.pctronix.co.nz) would be my reckonmendation. |
