296499 2004-11-26 00:42:00 I am interested in downloading (200+Mb) a program that can be used for setting up a satellite image processing program.

However, as I see things, the 200Mb data downloaded is not the sum total of disk space required to operate the program. I presume that there would also be files generated in windows/system and other places for the setting up and running of the original program.

Firstly - am I correct in this assumption?

Secondly - is it possible to contain all the workings (original download as well) on a CD so as not to use up any HDD space? I would expect that the CD would have to access the HDD to utilise Windows, etc.

I look forward to the knowledgeable comments that will either tell me that my idea is 'nuts' or that it might be feasable and how to go about it.

Cheers

296500 2004-11-26 02:04:00 to your first idea - i think the installer will have stuff compressed to make it smaller and then uncompress it when you install it hence requiring more space noone (22)
296501 2004-11-26 02:14:00 We would need to know the name of the programme to know whether it can be run off a CD and windows version would be handy as well .

There is probably a hack you can do once it is installed that would allow you to move (burn) the executables, etc, on to a CD and keep the minimum on HDD . It would require some knowledgeable registry tweaking and perhaps a batch file to make it work .

Why are you so keen on not installing it to HDD, is your storage space limited?

296502 2004-11-26 02:46:00 The program is called NASA World Wind. I don't know who wrote it.

My reason for not really wanting it on the HDD, is that i don't expect to use it that often and space (20Gb HDD) is getting used up.

296503 2004-11-26 03:04:00 I remember when the NASA image processing programmes fitted on a 360kB floppy . ;-)

It might be simplest to put the download package onto a CD, and install it when you want it .

You might find that there are a number of options when you install it so it doesn't use all that much space . In particular, it might come with sample image files which you would not want to keep on your harddisk .

296505 2004-11-26 04:36:00 It looks like it has a cache file which stores a lot of the data it uses to load, maps, images, zoom, perspective, etc, (a bit of guess work here) and I imagine the cache is a fair chunk of the total size . I also imagine it is more of an idex to online data and how it should be rendered .

The majority of the image data is downloaded as required depending on what location on the the planets surface your wishing to access . this amounts to Terrabytes of data all up, so is obviously out of the question for the average user to store localy .

There may be an option to choose where the cache resides eg; C: D: E: etc, or your CD drive . If the option is not there to choose or the CD drive it not listed it shouldn't be too hard to point it in the right direction .

Graham L could be of assistance in that area .
