296272 2004-11-25 11:43:00 Hay there 'Brainyacs'.
Just been having a.... er... heated discussion on how many sheets an Excel workbook can have in it. 200 plus is required coming to a size of around 2 and a bit MB I believe.
In my corner I've said it is limited to how much RAM is onboard.
In the other corner they say it's limited to 128 sheets.

Any clues????

I know you guys can help, a?? :D

296273 2004-11-25 12:06:00 Check at microsacm and in microscam excell help to see if there is a sheet limit. I am not aware of one but there is a ringing logic to 128.

Other wise it will be what you hard ware, and O/s?????? will hold up, in 2k On, page file can be increased by disk space radically out of proportion to ram.

BUT the rest must be pretty stable with out lots of stupid toys in the background.

Its like dvd/video editing 100gb files are possible, if the h/w can handell it.

Well I decided to test it... got a little bored by the time I got to 792 sheets :D Saved file size 1.4mb (no content in any of those sheets, just 792 blank sheets). RAM usage was a shade under 30mb by the time I stopped. RAM usage for Excel when its first started is around 6-7mb. I'm not sure how many more sheets I could have gotten in there, but at a guess it would have been well over 1000. So I'd say the person saying it's limited to 128 was wrong :p

296277 2004-11-26 07:35:00 Mike,

I dont have 2003, thats quite a nice spec page for M/S.

At least my logic wasnt too badly flawed.

296278 2004-11-26 08:23:00 Office 2003 has a better usage of resources than earlier versions. There could be a physical limitation on older versions.

Earlier versions fall over around 90 MB in spreadsheet size, but I have operated on spreadsheets over 200 MB on 2003.

Biggest has about 9,000,000 cells....

You must have the same job as me!! :D
Had a play, checked the help, went to MacroScam and.........
TA DA!
Yup, depends on resources. And as I guess most computers nowadays can handle large files (I can remember when I didn't have an HDD! Just used two FDDs. There were 150 of us in shoe box in middle of road! Opps, off subject, sorry). :^O
Any way, ta all. Much appreciated.
