What version of Fedora did you install? You are downloading updates on dialup?

I've noticed that even the recently released Core 3 has updates already available. Don't forget tho, these update are not just security fixes, but also the various application updates that have been released since Core 3 was frozen ready for distribution. You don't have to update all those if you don't wish to. Just look at each item and decide whether you want update it eg firefox, abiword, gaim etc.

296214 2004-11-26 07:44:00 I personally wouldnt bother updating everything, but as Jen says - With FC2 there's bound to be a fair few updates since it was released.

Most are just incremental program changes that you dont _really_ need.

Im willing to bet you're re-downloading half of Fedora!

296215 2004-11-26 09:20:00 I use the gaming realm for updating via yum, I also use their dag repository.

I've been trying to get them to mirror the rpm.livna and fedora-us as well but it seems drive space is limited. If you desperately need to get the nvidia drivers you can have a shot at it, although check nvidia's linux forum as there's quite a few reports of it not working and simple work arounds.

I was going to wait till livna produced a working RPM, much easier to keep updated this way and no need to mess around with xorg.conf.

When I first installed it, about a week ago, there was roughly 160+ downloads at the time, using the realm made life easier.

296216 2004-11-26 10:45:00 Well I tried to install the nvidia driver, the system packed a sad, I got fed up with it's lack of userfriendlyness, removed it, re-installed mandrake 10, re-installed all my stuff, installed the nvidia driver & it all worked 1st time. I did everything the same as the instructions, as I did with FC3. It must be my hardware or me that FC3 doesn't like. Now I've just got to figure out how to use wine. if only I could get the system working the same under linux as it does in windows. Mandrake's come the closest I've tried that I didn't have to pay for. phil.b (4456)
296217 2004-11-26 20:18:00 wine notepad.exe

Personally I would be inclined to install gcc so you can compile Wine with --enable-opengl

This way you can run certain games under Wine (Counter-strike/Half-Life for example work fine) without having to pay for Cedega (transgaming.com)

296218 2004-11-27 15:37:00 I finally decided to test Nvidia's newest drivers out.

My steps,

Downloaded the drivers, while downloading I editted the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I denoted (#) Load "dri" and also denoted the Start and End Section of dri.

I su-ed to root, changed directory to where the drivers downloaded chmod 777, I then ran it. I then /sbin/init 3.

logged in, su-ed to root
did /sbin/modprobe nvidia
then cp -a /dev/nividia* /etc/udev/devices/

I then editted /etc/udev/permissions.d/50-udev.permission
looked for the line
nvidia*:root:root:0660 and changed it to nvidia*:root:root:0666
saved it.

Then I init 5 and that was it.

Not what you'd expect to do, but it is so far the only workable method known, but at least it wasn't as bad as the dark ages of FC2 8k stack vs 4k stack, drivers came out months later.
