| 296818 | 2004-11-27 01:24:00 | A friend ask me to use excel to produce a formula to input start time hours minutes and seconds then the finish time hours minutes and seconds and then multiply by the number of people to produce the number of man hours taken. I did work one out using the 24 hour clock but the person wants it in the normal 12 hour clock am and pm. And wanted the input or hours minutes and second be entered in separately to make up the time entries. Can some one point me to a site to do this or does anyone done this sort of thing before and can give me some pointers. Thanks |

In the Topic Index see "Times, Adding And Subtracting" which also explains how Excel stores dates which is important to understand. In your situation you have hours, minutes and seconds in separate cells so in a fourth column enter the formula =TIME(A1,B1,C1) where A1 is Hours, B1 is Minutes and C1 is seconds. This will be the starting time so do the same for end time. Next you subtract end time from start time to get the number elapsed time for that person. If your times run over days eg 10:00PM to 3AM then you will also need to include the day in your calculations. When you subtratc time you may see it will include AM/PM in the result which you may not want to appear. With the cell selected choose Format|Cells|Number tab from the menu with a Category of Custom then enter the format h:mm:ss hth |
