297062 2004-11-30 22:40:00 I remember reading some reviews of Mandrake which said that it was always ahead of Redhat at adopting new versions of software. Certainly we can't complain about choice. You can go stable or you can go bleeding edge or somewhere inbetween. Dolby Digital (160)

297064 2004-12-01 03:06:00 Chill,

ifconfig says there is no eth0 - it just won't load the driver. Maybe I need to specify it to start with linux. Trying that now.

297065 2004-12-01 03:10:00 ifconfig eth0 up ? Graham L (2)
297066 2004-12-01 03:30:00 Again, no such device :(.

I set tulip to load at startup, but "failed to load module tulip". It can't seem to find it...

--------------------

Update:

Found & fixed the problem. In the kernel configuration, I needed to select the Tulip driver, which I have done, and am now recompiling the kernel :).

Thanks for all the help, and rest assure I will need more soon :p

Cheers George

Not being proficient angers me. It's just never there when you search for it.

I get so sick of it I end up searching for things like "tell me where to bloody find the bloody answer you nut"... which doesn't work either.

I agree ;-) It still happens from time-to-time

George12:
You made your own kernel?
If you'd have mentioned that from the start - I was under the impression you used genkernel.

In Gentoo 2005.0 they will make the 2.6 kernel default :-) Next time I would be inclined to get you building a 2.6 kernel, Ive found it much easier than the 2.4 ;-)

Perhaps that was simply ignorance on my behalf building 2.4 kernels at the time though - As its been a year since 2.6.0 came out Ive certainly had a good chance to grasp the better workings of it :)

297069 2004-12-01 04:20:00 Sorry, I forgot to say that. I was following the guide, in which the default way was to configure yourself. Genkernel was also offered as an option though, but I didn't use it.

All works now though :). Im installing xorg right now.

297070 2004-12-01 04:45:00 Wicked :-) The best way to get it all done is simply:
emerge openbox

I like Openbox, nice and minimalistic but works well.

Otherwise:
emerge kde

Dont forget to:
nano /etc/rc.conf

Set down the bottom you want to use "kdm" as a display manager, and "kde-3.3.1" or "openbox" as a desktop environment!
