296786 2004-11-26 21:42:00 What is the max length a USB cable can be?

We want to set up a Wi-Fi network over a long distance with a USB adapter and need to know how far the usb adapter can be from the server.

296787 2004-11-26 21:50:00 5 Metres.

Above that you will get errors due to transit time etc, and will need "repeater" hubs.

296789 2004-11-27 01:07:00 You can buy extender cables, which have the repeater. It's alleged that you can chain 5 of them to get 25m. This would be quite expensive.

I've seen advertisments for a product which mightget you more range, at a reasonable price. It "somehow" (I don't know the speed or any other details) converts from USB to some signal through "up to 50m" of CAT5 cable, then back to USB.

http://www.mgram.com.au/ is the site, and look for their cat. number 11666-1.

296790 2004-11-27 02:33:00 why not just go wireless and not have such a long usb cable? Prescott (11)
296791 2004-11-27 04:19:00 Because the usb cable has to go from the server in the garage to the dish on the roof:

Yeah... 5m should do.

296792 2004-11-27 06:14:00 Funny you should mention that - Because tomorrow I'll be getting one of those 802.11b USB Drives from DSE because of their Linux support with the latest 2.6.10-rc2 kernels!

Looks like I wont have to go around to my mates place.... Could be a good website to help me join the NZWireless!

Sucks that WEP is essentially useless :-(
