2004-11-26 08:49:00 | How on earth do these sites, such as supercheappc.biz and the likes, manage to sell PC parts at prices below wholesale? For example, they sell an 80GB hard drive for $80 - I get them for $86. A 200GB SATA is $186.25 there, I get it for $187. Where do they get them from? Do they purchase in massive quantity? They all seem not to have any physical presence, so they probably aren't THAT big - not big enough to purchase in extreme bulk. So HOW do they do it? Thoughts appreciated. Cheers George

2004-11-26 09:06:00 | George,Mail your supplier, tell them you want 200 80gb harddrives, and make them an offer based on what you want to pay and see what happens... Well, what will happen is that they will get agrivated when you tell them it was a scam toi find their lowset price... ...............HA. And then you can onsell them for a mark up of $2 an item,

2004-11-26 09:36:00 | I have also heard a theory. Many of the owners/operators of these cheap computer sellers are Asians, and they all sort of 'work as a team' and buy in large from companies in Asia. This way, the people who start up a firm buying from NZ wholesalers can't compete. Only something i heard (from an owner of a Auckland based Computer store) and don't no if thats the case, but it could explain it. Becuase i also tend to buy more of my parts from normal online retail stores than teh wholesalers i'm with...

2004-11-26 10:05:00 | I think supercheappc.biz works by "word of mouth", nice one! Who really buys from NZ suppliers these days? NZ dollar was strong against Aussie dollar and this was the best time to buy in bulk from over there and freight/customs was better than buying from the likes of Taiwan, in the end hefty margins were to be made. Just watch NZ's dollar, when it drops then it might be best to just buy from suppliers here. You haven't mentioned your suppliers name, which is good, but you are going against their privacy by admitting the costs you pay, although sounds like normal retail price. It seems you maybe treated unfairly, but the more you buy the less you pay has always been the case. supercheappc.biz has a presence, maybe you should visit them if you live in Auckland. Kame

2004-11-26 10:21:00 | Who buys from NZ suppliers? uh....Everyone or the suppliers would be out of bizzo,And looking at the lines carried by 99 percent of stores its a 2 step process to see exactly where they sourced it. Retail outlets in NZ can't match the volumes of the importers and distributers, although i wouldn't be surprised if the likes of companies selling below wholesale are very closely tied in with a supplier wanting a bigger slice. You will find 99.9 percent of what is imported by shops is either the very lowest quality,or the high quality niche products. I would love to see the average joe import a small number of items from Taiwan and make a good earn, especially when a couple units go tits up...... Oh,and there are no privacy disclaimers written into the contract when you sign up for a supplier,In fact if i want to see some companies pricelist i just send them an email and ask for it. The low prices are a combination of buying in volume, special deals, and having a tiny tiny tiny amount of markup.
