296621 2004-11-26 06:45:00 I just bought Ghost 2003, and have been throught the tutorial.

I want to make a ghost of one partition, format the harddrive, then load on that one partition.

Going throught the tutorial, the Ghost program gives the partition you are backing up a special Ghost name.

My question is, if I format, then I no longer have that partition with a special Ghost name, so will it still restore the ghost properly?

Thanks

296622 2004-11-26 07:02:00 I would think so, it would be kind of usless for data recovery if it couln't recognise the partition . It probably uses the partition tables which a format doesn't erase .

Also, AFAIK, you don't have to restore to the same partition or disk, which suggests that there is a degree of flexibility in the programme .

296623 2004-11-26 08:00:00 i've use ghost extensively .........what you need to do is either run it from floppy, or cd image, or from the windows gui..........from windows run the 'ghost interactively, you will need to decide if you want to ghost to a spare partition or another drive or cdrw........cd is a little slower......anyway when you get the 'reboot' and starting ghost operation it'll ask you firstly if you want 'mark the drives for use with ghost' I always say NO........take the choice that allows you 'forensic quality images' ............then run the program go from 'partition to image' and write it to cd if thats what you want.......i use compression......high compression and it'll fit about a Gb onto a cd........you can write that image back to ANY partition you want............ drcspy (146)
296624 2004-11-27 10:20:00 1) your Image file must be placed on CD's, or another drive, if you intend to format the drive. You can place the Image on another partition providing you do not format the drive.
2) The partition that you restore will be reformatted to an exact replica of the original partition.
3) You do not have to format the drive prior to restoring a partition, it will be overwritten anyway.
4) Ghost works better in Dos, if you have formatted the drive you will need to operate Ghost from Dos.

296625 2004-11-27 12:31:00 Is this partition the primary pattition?

If so anything it links to in the other partitions will be lost, if not backed up in some way.

If you are only copying 1 partition and it is the active partition the new home must be formatted active.

Acouple of spare disks and some practice are advisable, also a full backup of the original disk.

If you do not have experience with Gohst, it has been known to bite "'very hard"

I prefer the earlier versions for what you are dooing.
