297576 2004-11-28 23:25:00 I installed AVG7, configured the EMS and then did that EICAR_Test_File to check that AVG was scanning my emails OK .

I thought AVG had picked it up as it showed one of those weird growly animal pics of their's and said there was a virus . (albeit a fake test one . )

However, my ISP Server Quicksilver has just emailed me telling me that the EICAR_Test_File was intercepted, and were sending me the email to let me know . Apparantly if they pick anything up in your emails they send you a Weekly Virus Digest email . Hadn't realised they did that .

So, did both pick it up? If Quicksilver is doing the intercepting do you think I should turn off the Incomining email checking by AVG?

S/be - incoming. Sorry.

297578 2004-11-28 23:33:00 NOPE. I wld leave it going. Not all ISP virus scanning is 100% .

They may scan simple viruses/trojans etc, BUT its a good idea to have a backup.

It's kinda like Ihug's spam thing that detects spam. I havent enabled it to check my email for spam, BUT it does, (I use Spampal, which does a better job), and if u go into an email's properties, this Ispy or whatever its called, says its spam lol. So, why have it scan when u still get the spam anyway.

297579 2004-11-28 23:38:00 Thanks Spacemannz. Will keep AVG7 going.
AVG7 installed like a dream, still can't believe it.
Had Avast waiting in the wings to do my virus checks just in case I was as unlucky as those who encountered so many problems.

297580 2004-11-29 00:46:00 This is interesting. I have AVG7 set up to scan all incoming and outgoing mail and it won't even let me send the Eicar test string in an attachment. It never gets past the local outgoing mail scan so I can't check for it coming in.
If I scan the floppy disk with the Eicar test on it , even with the Eicar buried in a zip file within a zip file it has no trouble finding it.

You can say that again!

When I downloaded the zip file to a folder on my desktop nothing was picked up by AVG, yet you say AVG picked up Eicar buried in the zip file on your floppy.

When I first tested it, I put the zip file in the Email as an attachment and AVG did nothing. I posted the email to myself, and it came back without AVG saying anything about it.

But, when I extracted the Eicar file from the zip package and then put it in the Email and tried to send it, AVG's virus alert warning did come up.

So, maybe Quicksilver picked it up when I posted email with the Zipped package. Whatever happened, I now feel a damn sight safer knowing I have two programs preventing Viruses from trying to get into my computer.

Still don't know exactly how any of it works.
