297330 2004-11-28 14:26:00 Not often, but it worries me; my XP SP2 Dell dimension 4600i restarts itself. Like just now, I was standing across the room when I noticed that it was shutting down. I had just got up to make a coffee and it had been idle less than half a minute. There were over 300 MB free RAM. Why? Vince ?:| Vince (406)
297331 2004-11-28 14:28:00 Maybe it's overheating and the thermal protection is shutting it down?

Maybe you have virusss!?

Maybe someone is playing dirty trickss on you?

297333 2004-11-28 14:53:00 nt security manager?
Were you using nero burning?
Have you turned off restart on errors so you get BOSD and hopefully error message,

XP and SP2 there are a gazillion bugs available in there to cause this, plus all the net nasties.

You really need to get some error messages or at least more detail of what it was dooing at the time.

IF it was mine I would now: update, AVG, a2, stinger.

disconnect the net. shut down restart in safe mode run avg stinger and a2 and see what they found.

mine did this the other day, with NT security shut down

thats what i did, stinger found and killed a worm.

297334 2004-11-28 15:02:00 You might be getting a BSOD and as default settings it's set to automatically restart, which is not helpful if you can't see what the error is because of the restart.

Have a look through you administration logs found in Control Panel under Administration | Computer Management.

Or alternatively you can turn off the automatic restarts by Control Panel | Systems | Advanced Tab. Under Startup & Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, unchech the box in front of System reboot.

Although none of these provides solutions, it may discover what is actually the cause of the error, by providing you with an error, if there is an error that is.

I have turned off the automatic restart, but the logs don't exist [I wonder why] so there is no help there. The Event Viewer doesn't show anything either. I guess I will have to wait until it happens again. Thanks. :-) Vince

297338 2004-11-29 14:26:00 Vince,

Try stinger is a simple stand alone (sorry type this one (vil.nai.com) or google) and may be some onlines , the adds are allways being bandied about here if find that you need a handfull of them and you need to vairy what you use.

I use a2, AVG, And stinger as a set but I also run spy hunter Mcaffe Spy sweeper and will use onlines just to check they all find different things.

There is a simpler cure, its called LINUX.

Now I have to get that " UGH " Compaqu, laptop to run on it, could be a mission in the dvd writer area.

297339 2006-02-11 22:24:00 anyone find it ironic that when you change the "automatically restart when error occurs" option, you need to reboot your computer? or is it just me...... vikesguy (6473)
