| 297350 | 2006-03-14 01:33:00 | I have the original HL2 that came on 5 CDs. I also have all the updates that are embedded in the game. I had to uninstall HL2 and when I did so lost all the updates. When I reinstalled it I couldn't play it until I had reinstalled all the updates about 1.2gb. Trevor :) |

I used the backup program they supply, but in the end, I decided not to uninstall it because I would probably still have to reauthenticate & decrypt even if I'm restoring a backup. |

| 297352 | 2006-03-14 04:57:00 | Hi guys, this is interesting, however it is the best safe guard going to prevent pirate installations as each game sold is registried to an account. To activate the program file need decryption. There is no problem with playing offline at LAN partied, if you use the option (tick offine save), when last online. I am personally amazed more software companies havent adopted this approach. Thankfully! |

| 297353 | 2006-03-14 05:12:00 | I am personally amazed more software companies havent adopted this approach I am thankfull that more software companies haven't adopted this approach. It effectively kills the second hand & rental market for those games. You can't loan it to a friend when you are sick of it. All steam games only have patches available via steam, so if someone buys or reinstalls counter strike to play with everyone else at a LAN, they have to download a couple of gig worth of patches before they can play instead of just getting the latest patch off a network share. That is assuming that they had time to install and decrypt the game before they went to the LAN. hl2 is probably going to outlast steam, but once steam goes, you won't be able to install it. |

Uh...no its not, Its as bad as anything else, Cracked releases of the game that enable online play via the same servers as legitimate buyers come think and fast, usually within a couple hours of an official update. |

| 297358 | 2006-04-25 09:17:00 | The real sad thing? I bought 1.5 awhile ago, and finally registered it wanting to get the free 1.6 upgrade. Guess what? Someone already registered it. So much for so secure. | Neongreen (6358) | ||
| 297359 | 2006-04-25 12:07:00 | I wonder how many people with HL2 are not useing it after reinstallation because of the nearly 1.5gb of updates you have to D/L. I'm one of them so the 5 disks and box can sit in the back of the cupboard collecting cobwebs. Trevor :) |
