297161 2004-11-28 22:56:00 So, whats wrong with a 6800 GT? mejobloggs (264)
297162 2004-11-28 23:20:00 You seem very opinionated Crazy Monkey, both ATI and nVidia make good graphics cards, and both have had their fair share of failures.

I would hate to be buying a $700+ at the moment, prices are still relatively high and their doesnt seem to be a consensus by the community as to what is better the X800 or the 6800.

From the reviews and opinion articles ive read it does appear that the 6800 performs better in OpenGL where as the X800 is better in DX9.0. But even then the difference in performance isnt huge and would only be noticable in benchmarks. Take this into account when buying your card, if the majority of games you'll play are based on the D3 engine then a 6800 would be a good purchase but if the games your planning to play use the HLF2 engine or are DX9.0 based then an ATI card will be a better purchase.

I have to admit to being a fan of ATI but the 6800GT does appear to offer a really good combination of performance, cost and manage heat output. Personally i dont think you can go wrong with either a X800PRO or a 6800GT. I think that at the end of the day ATI offers better all round performance (just my opinion), D3 & HLF2 benchmark figures seem to be clouding peoples vision of late.

Just remember that both nVidia and ATi are expect to annouce (and possible ship) new revisions to their existing cores before christmas. These will intially demand a premium price but should hopefully push down the price of cards currently on the market. These new cores shouldnt offer huge increases in performance so you wont be missing out on anything. To get the best price you need to leave your purchase as long as possible, but not so long so that their no stock avaliable.

297163 2004-11-29 00:01:00 Yep, thanks for the advice Pete. I'm more of a Half Life 2 fan, but who knows what kind of mods and games could use Doom3's engine in the future.

This (www.theinquirer.net) looks like Ati's next product line. Doesn't look like too much of an improvement over the XT PE. I've seen a few reviews where they've overclocked their X800 pro vivos to higher levels than that.

For the moment the prices are still quite high, but I've got $600 here and another $250 that I can get in the coming weeks. How long can I put off playing HL2 for? Not very long, this PCI card is slow as. :)

Ahh and I hate retailers that don't reply fast enough!

297164 2004-11-29 05:41:00 Well I've just purchased the last HIS Excalibur Radeon X800 Pro Vivo in NZ for $806.50 incl courier. :)

The Gigabyte Vivos are not in stock, and won't be in stock until January now. Oh well I think this will be just as good and for the price it beats most of the other cards on Pricespy. :)

297165 2004-11-29 06:10:00 Ive got a friend with the HIS X800PRO, he was easily able to unlock the extra pipelines and with the kickass cooler it comes with it overclocked well. Pete O'Neil (250)

What a load of bollocks nighthawk, the 6600GT was designed to offer 9800PRO performace at 9600XT prices.
