2004-11-28 09:34:00 | Probably not a whole lot of difference. One advantage of the Duron is that you can throw any socket A CPU on that your BIOS, or an upgraded BIOS, supports. | Murray P (44) | |
2004-11-28 09:42:00 | what about motherboard FSB? ie what say it takes SD-RAM (PC-133)? I'm not sure what it uses, but it would be cool if I could chuck in a 2400+! | crazy monkey (6347) | |
2004-11-28 11:47:00 | >Probably not a whole lot of difference< Old benchmarks used to indicate that a duron of equivalent speed would spank a p3 in quite a few applications. It would be faster but not very noticeable in real life. A board that takes a duron of this speed would probably take sd ram which sort of chokes planting in anything larger. Unless you have a more recent board and thatt begs the question why would you stick a duron of that speed in it ?

2004-11-28 20:17:00 | It's not my PC .... yet. I might be given it as my grandmar has no use for it anymore. It might be a good server with a few extra ram sticks chucked in it. I was just wanting to know which comp to choose out of the 900MHz and my older PIII. I guess I will go wiht the 900 then. Does anyone know what the max CPU you could put in a motherboard that takes SD-RAM is?

2004-11-28 20:22:00 | The amount of ram a mobo can take, has nothing to do with the CPU it can take. You would have to check out the makers site to see if the motherboard can go as high as 2400 and the site will also tell you how much ram it can handle. If you go above what the motherboard can handle with either a CPU that is too high or too much ram (ie: if u got 1 GB and the mobo can only handle 768), the system wont run.

2004-11-28 20:34:00 | a lot of boards that can run a duron 900 run DDR. they also should be able to run a tbird or xp procesor unless you got one of the real early boards. | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-11-28 20:47:00 | I know that how much RAM a motherboard can take has nothing to do with the cpu it can take. It is just that the FSB is different. 133 for a motherboard that takes SD-RAM and 266 for a motherboard that takes DDR | crazy monkey (6347) | |
