297729 2004-11-29 07:18:00 Hi. It's my Birthday in 2 days, and to treat myself, I've decided to buy a CD Writer :D.

It needs to be under $200 (They are all aren't they?), preferebly around $100. I *could* go for an el cheepo model, but I don't want it to die in 4 months.

This is what I'm looking for.

Burn speed: Not really concerned, no less than 32x
Read speed: Preferebly 52x, again, no less then 32x
Re-Write speed: Not concerned
DVD playback: I have a PS2, and stand alone DVD player, so not a concern. If I need to, I'll upgrade later on. Would be nice though.
Other Features: Must have "Fast Error Block skipping", as I don't want Alcohol to take forever to burn... erm... backup a CD.
Interface: Internal
Child Proof: Definetly ;)

Is there any particular drive that springs to mind for anyone? Does anyone have the perfect drive that has all the above things? Remember, it has to be in a Christchurch store, as I'll pay in cash.

Thanks, MM :)

If you've got $200 to spend, why not go the whole hog and buy a DVD writer, you can buy a name brand (forget the Sony) for less than $200 including GST.

If you just want a CD writer, then they can be had for just over $50 these days.
The ASUS and AOPEN I have used before with no hassles, ok I had to replace the Asus when the auto insert led died but it still burnt.

Check out www.pricespy.co.nz for makes, models, prices and whose close to you.

297731 2004-11-29 07:26:00 I've just bought myself the Asus here (www.pricespy.co.nz). So far so good, nice speedy 'el cheapo'

As you will already know, the quality of Asus parts are amongst the top anywhere, so you shouldn't go wrong.

Available from Dragon Computer for $50incl GST.

Are you sure you don't mean you want a Dual Layer DVD Writer?

297733 2004-11-29 07:46:00 the reason i don't want a dvd writer, is then i won't have any monies to spend on a decent ADSL router :o

anyway, 1 thing. the drive in question has a covering (edward.orcon.net.nz). So I'm going to need a drive that can handle this. Any ideas?

297734 2004-11-29 07:55:00 I take it you took that photo with the flash off as it wasn't a flash photo. LOL

Hmmmm that case, it may be that you may have to consider going external, or a 5 1/4 external case and a drive popped into that.

Does that cover ring come off and are there two 5 1/4 bays underneath that? Maybe a blank cover to fill the slot?

Otherwise upgrade the case...... JJJJJ has a nice brand new HP pc going cheap that he doesn't seem to want anymore.

All CD drives are compatible with Linux, so you are pretty safe there.

297737 2004-11-29 08:14:00 Any standard cdrw/dvdrw should fit behind the "covering " There is no room for a second drive but since it is by the look of it , a 52 speed liteon it won't be a great loss. The eject button on the front is a simple extension that works on the eject button of the cd player in question. the highlander (245)
297738 2004-11-29 08:16:00 ah, good :)

i saw an article a while back, about how mandrake linux 9.2 broke some cd drives, by sending screwy firmware...
