297631 2004-11-29 01:47:00 Hi all saviour, I have a very old canon camcorder, still useable but not the battery. The rechargeable battery unit is 6V/2400mAh, consists of 5 x 1.2v sub-c type batteries. I manage to find the same identity type of Sub-c 1.2v battery from Dicksmith, but they are $14.95 each and very expensive. Can anyone tell me if I can use 5 of Energizer AA 1.2v/2100mAh rechargeable batteries by joining them together to make it equal to 6V/10500mAh. Or can anyone point me to a web site where someone can help. Thanks. ahd8888 (184)
297632 2004-11-29 01:59:00 The mAh rating does not "add" when you use multiple cells in series.

5 AA 2100 mAh cells connected in series will make a 6V, 2100 mAh battery. ;-) To make a 10500 mAh unit, you could connect them in parallel, but that would give 1.2V. There's no free lunch. :-(

You will find cheaper sub-C cells ... try Jaycar, or even an internet auction. ;-) There are NZ companies which will do a very neat job if installing replacement cells. See what they will charge.

There may be sources of batteries overseas (try Google) but watch freight and exchange rates, as well as GST ).

No, you cant get that capacity (no-one can) that way.
You can get 6V 2100mAh, which will probably be adequate. If you were using the reduced capacity with the old batteries, these will be better than that, but not really up to the standard of the original pack when it was new. (Cheap batteries, like cheap anything, are not neccesarily good value though.) You may have to restrict yourself to only using short bursts of filming with a fair "rest" period to allow the battery to cool down a bit.

297634 2004-11-29 02:15:00 Thanks guys. I stand corrected about adding the mAh. Anyway, 2100mAh is adequate for me, but the main thing is if by joining 5 x AA 1.2v Energizer batteries together, will it work or damage my camcorder? ahd8888 (184)
297635 2004-11-29 02:43:00 Should work fine. ;-)

To learn about batteries, try the Battery University (http://www.batteryuniversity.com/).

297636 2004-11-29 02:46:00 Provided the AA's will handle the current that the camera needs, they will work. It's likely that modern AA's can do so, but we have no idea of the currents that are required.

Make sure you get solder tab type cells if you plan on soldering them in series.
Its not recommended to solder connections to nipple type cells, as by the time you get them hot enough, you have usually destroyed the seals.

lol, :^O

Amazing, didn't know there is a university for studying battery. I am going to ask for an enrolment pack. Ha......u make my day!

297638 2004-11-29 03:13:00 That battery university site is an on-line version of a book. It's very good.

I see the DSE sub-C are only 1600 mAh, so the AAs will be better. :D Jaycar have sub-C 2700 mAh (solder tab) at $10-95 each.

297639 2004-12-05 21:20:00 Hi, if anyone want to know whether I succeed in using Energiser Rechargeable AA Battery for replacing my original rechargeable battery for my camcorder. Here is the result: It works! But how long can it last about the life of the battery itself, I don't know. Only time will tell. And whether the camcorder original battery charger will charge the Energiser AA rechargeable battery or not, I am not sure. Will try it out when battery power run out. Send me an e-mail (ahd8888@hotmail.com) for an update if u interested to know. ahd8888 (184)
