298854 2004-12-01 00:35:00 Hi there

I want to set my computer up as the central hub for my home entertainment. Maybe something like TIVO so I can recieve TV/Sky and record to my hard drive or DVD. Remote control so I can play these to my TV, play music to my home stereo etc. Maybe network my computers up and have it controling most things by remote if I can.

Can you guys and gals who have tried this point me in some sort of general direction on this subjet. Websites or personal experiance etc.

Is it worth me even trying? Am i better off just buying a philipps or Pan DVD recorder with the hard drive?

Any help uchly appreciated on this.

Thanks

Darrin :):)

298855 2004-12-01 00:44:00 Well u can get a tv tuner (most have remotes), there might be a way to get Sky, thru a TV tuner, BUT not a good idea for anyone to explain it here.

(There might be a way to connect tv in to a sky decoder, I dont know).

And all u need is an internal IDE DVD player. Some TV tuners (maybe all), will let u record normal TV to hdd then to DVD, if u have a DVD burner on your system.

298856 2004-12-01 00:53:00 Hi there

Just to clarify. I already have sky digital so wanted to see if i could connect the cable to my computer as well and run it all from the computer. At the moment sky is split to 3 different rooms in the house. Split it again to the computer maybe.

Thanks for your reply.

298857 2004-12-01 00:57:00 OK. Umm, you MIGHT be able to connect SKY, if u have something that has Video in, on your system. And just connect an RCA cable from the decoder to the tv in. Or something like a converter video box, with video/scart inputs, to the pc (If the digital SKY decoder has scart). Spacemannz (808)
298858 2004-12-01 01:11:00 Its easy as,Just need a tv capture card and the right cables.

Probally best to go talk to a comp store in person.

And no i do not mean an appliance store with a computer section....

298859 2004-12-01 01:19:00 Hi

I have had this set-up in the past, with success .

I decided that getting a TV Tuner Card was a waste of time as my goal was to record sky digital, as you can only change the channel on the SKY Box, not via the PC .

A TV Tuner card is only of value if you use the COAX out on the back of the SKY Digital box, and feed that to the TV Tuner card . This way you can tune in the standard UHF / VHF Channels (if you have your Roof COAX areal thing hooked into the COAX-in on the sky box) and the SKY Digital channel .

I took the approach of getting SKY Digital hooked up via the SCART connector on the back, to the S-VIDEO in on my VIVO Leadtek video card, and the audio channels to the line in on my sound card .

This enabled me to watch, record or burn to DVD the SKY Digital feed through my PC .

To get the output from the PC to my TV, I hooked up the S-Video Out (VIVO Card) and the Line Out (Sound Card) back to my HI-FI Receiver / TV .

This may sound confusing, but it worked really well . . . . until I tried to explain to my girlfriend how to work it .

298860 2004-12-01 01:29:00 From what i have seen the tv capture cards have far superior recording software (PVR all the way to the bank) ,so even if the actuall TV decoder is not used the purchase would still be justiified, and you can get TV cards with all manner of inputs,so its just a case of the right card and the right cable. metla (154)
298861 2004-12-01 01:33:00 Agreed Melta, but with my set-up I was using the Leadtek Winfast PVR software which came with the video card, the exact same software that is bundled with their TV Tuner cards.

or am I getting confused between TV Tuner Cards & TV Capture Cards?

298862 2004-12-01 01:42:00 Whoa,If you were using the Winfast PVR software then your right on the money,It certainly would make the purchase of a TV/Capture card reduntant.

Meh.....My leadtek video card come with the worst capturing software i have yet seen,.......Spewin....
