298365 2004-11-30 23:31:00 Aren't Macs used a lot for video editing - which is why they have 8GB ? agent_24 (4330)
298366 2004-12-01 06:16:00 i was encoding video today and i got up to 900 / 1024 megs ram usage so if i had 512 meg im sure it would have been slower / easy to crash etc noone (22)
298367 2004-12-01 06:30:00 Doesnt help when most mobos can only handle upto 4 gb as well.

Only Enterprise, Windows server 2003, datacentre edition are higher (32 and 64 gb).

298369 2004-12-01 06:43:00 It goes like this:

64MB to 128MB - Now it works
128MB to 256MB - Stunning increase
256MB to 384MB - Windows will thank you
256MB to 512MB - Finally, you have "enough" - great increase
512MM to 1GB - Often won't notice it, but can be great depending on what you do
2GB to 4GB - Now you're talking :p

298370 2004-12-01 21:20:00 Does anyone here have more then one gig of ram for a normal computer ( no server etc ) noone (22)

lagbort does - 1.5GB at one stage methinks.

RAM is beautiful. If you habe a GB then you can go as far as turning your pagefile off, which makes a huge performance increase.

I have 512MB and my system chokes - frequently have less than 70MB free. Sometimes it goes below 8MB free...

I put an extra 512MB in my server and it's increased in performance atleast ten fold.

298372 2004-12-02 04:26:00 I have 1536Mb on board at the moment.
2*512 at 400Mhz, 1*512 at 333Mhz It does the job.
