2004-12-02 04:36:00 | I had Nortons AV and NIS 2004 pre-installed on PC with XP Home but found when trying to send e-mail thru OE it would interrupt transmission and place the message in the sent box. A pop-up would advise that message should be re-sent from the sent box(but did not elaborate on how to). Adopting an unweildy process of forwarding seemed only option. Eventually decided to can Nortons altogether and returned to ZonealarmPro with AVG and have had no further trouble. However a friend is experiencing the same problem although running a different OS and using a different ISP. Xtra has advised her to disable Nortons when sending e-mails - I would have thought that if you are connecting to the Internet this is when you would want it enabled. Can anyone give us advice on how to overcome this problem. Thanks | Woodpile (6496) | |
2004-12-02 04:59:00 | This might fix it How to prevent the outgoing email message from displaying when sending email Situation: When you send email after installing Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2002 or 2003, you see an "Outgoing Email" message. The message remains until all of your outgoing email has been scanned. You want to stop the message box from displaying during a scan. Solution:3 Follow the steps that apply to your version of NAV to prevent the outgoing email message from displaying when sending email. NOTE: Disabling the outgoing email message from displaying does not disable outgoing email scanning. NAV 2002: There is a NAV program update that enables you to stop the outgoing email scan progress indicator message box from displaying. Follow these steps to download the NAV program update, and then configure the program to not display the outgoing email scanning message: To download the NAV program update: Open NAV. Click LiveUpdate. Click Next. Download the NAV program update. Restart the computer when prompted. To configure NAV 2002 to disable the outgoing email scan progress indicator message box: Open NAV. Click Options. Click Email. Uncheck "Display progress indicator when sending email." NAV 2003: To configure NAV 2003 to disable the outgoing email scan progress indicator message box: Open NAV. Click Options. Click Email. Click Advanced. Uncheck "Display progress indicator when sending email." Close NAV.

2004-12-02 05:44:00 | Thanks but.. The problem is more that the outward scanning seems to make the OE timeout and then puts the unsent message into the sent box even tho' it has not been sent - this can result in one thinking that the message has gone if you are not watching closely. It is also unnecessarily cumbersome to have to try and re-send the message from the sent box. It appears that this problem may have arisen from a Nortons Liveupdate as the program in both instances had initially worked OK.

2004-12-02 05:47:00 | Thanks Jim I guess this would solve the immediate problem but I think that when you are paying for this type of protection, having to disable it is a bit anti-concept don't you think?

2004-12-02 06:27:00 | You can not have Zone Alarm & Norton scanning Email at the same time. Disable the Norton Mail scanning. AVG & Zone Alarm get along fine.

2004-12-02 06:40:00 | If the Outgoing scan fails it puts the message in the sent items even though it has not actually been sent. This is very undesireable and is not an uncommon problem with NAV Mail scanning is just an extra, NAV will still protect you from viruses. Most likely your ISP scans your email for viruses anyway and if you also scan Incoming then there is no point in scanning outgoing.

Just because they provide it doesn't mean you have to use it. Scanning outbound e-mail is a waste of time, if it didn't catch it on the way in, it sure as hell won't catch is on the way out. It's a huge and very common problem, just disable it and make life easy for yourself. |

2004-12-02 06:43:00 | Sorry I may have not made it clear that Nortons was running on its own and is on my friend's PC. On my own PC because of this problem I uninstalled Nortons entirely and replaced it with the Zonealarmpro/AVG combo which I had installed on my earlier machine. My friend's PC has only Nortons installed. | Woodpile (6496) | |
2004-12-02 09:22:00 | > My friend's PC has only Nortons installed. That is OK. It is a common problem and as the others have said, it is not necessary to have outgoing emails scanned for viruses so disabling the outgoing scanning should fix it.
